National Archives to eliminate some hours

The National Archives is consolidating their hours of operation to eliminate
evening and Saturday hours. This would effectively cut-off access to the
archives for working people and weekend visitors. An alternative schedule is
being proposed by the Records Preservation and Access Committee (RPAC, a
joint NGS/FGS committee). Please read the message below and, if you agree
with RPAC's recommendations, sign the online petition at
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/FGS2006/petition.html before September 8.
This issue needs immediate support from the genealogical community.
Societies are asked to please forward this message to your organization's
e-mail list ASAP. Thank you.
Barbara LeakPresident & FGS DelegateGenealogical & Historical Council of
Sacramento Valley

----- Original Message from RPAC ---------- Distributed by the Federation of
Genealogical Societies (FGS) -----
We were honored to have Dr. Allen Weinstein, Archivist of the United States
attend the FGS/NEHGS 2006 Conference in Boston and to address us in the
Opening Session on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Following his remarks, he was
presented with a letter by the Chair of the Records Preservation and Access
Committee (RPAC) addressing concerns about the proposed changes in the hours
of operation for the Research Rooms at the National Archives.
It has come to our attention that very few of our constituencies are making
their voices heard on this issue. This lack of response sends a loud signal
to the Archives that this is not a serious issue and that closing the
Archives on evenings and Saturdays is irrelevant. The RPAC has recommended
the following suggestions for the Archives to consider:
1) To accommodate the needs of those who need access on Saturdays, we
propose that you close one other day per week. This would be at your
discretion. Other archives often close Sunday and Monday.2) Users who need
evening hour access could be accommodated by opening the archives later in
the day, again at your discretion.
If you agree with the recommendations stated above, we are asking your
support by immediately going on-line and adding your "signature" to our
petition to substitute the hours of access and still help the archives to
meet their need to consolidate their hours of operation. Before 8 September
2006, please go to:http://www.PetitionOnline.com/FGS2006/petition.html (Case
sensitive)
If you would like to send your own personal letter, send it prior to 8
September 2006 and address it to:
Regulations Comments Desk (NPOL)Room 4100, Policy and Planning StaffNational
Archives and Records Administration8601 Adelphi RoadCollege Park, MD
20740-6001
______________________________________________________
My E-mail is protected by Norton Anti-Virus 2005

My E-mail is protected by Norton Anti-Virus 2005

----- Original Message -----
From: "Barbara Leak" <kin2barb@surewest.net>
Subject: In Memoriam: Iris Carter Jones

> The Genealogical & Historical Council of Sacramento Valley is saddened to
> report the death of our friend and colleague, Iris Carter Jones, who
> passed away on Tuesday morning, March 21, 2006.
>
> Iris was already engaged in genealogical research when, in 1979, she
> became a member of the Genealogical Association of Sacramento (G.A.S.).
> She served as president of G.A.S. from 1988 to 1990 and was editor of the
> *G.A.S. Lites* newsletter for many years.
>
> Having Krefeld German immigrant ancestry, Iris was a founding member of
> the Sacramento German Genealogy Society. Through her business, Links
> Genealogy Publications, she edited and published *Krefeld Immigrants and
> Their Descendents,* as well as *The Fountain,* a newsletter for the
> surname Welch/Welsh/Walsh.
>
> In 1987, she helped organize the Genealogical & Historical Council of
> Sacramento Valley. She served as Council president from 2000 to 2003 and
> was editor of Council's newsletter from 1998 to 2004. She was also a
> former regional director of the California State Genealogical Alliance.
>
> Iris' long-time friend, Ralpha Crouse, remembers that "she never turned
> down a challenge and threw herself into anything that needed to be done. .
> .but she was also very good at delegating." She chaired such events as
> G.A.S.' annual "Ancestor Safari" and the Council's 1996 conference. She
> served as local arrangements chair for the 2004 National Genealogical
> Society conference in Sacramento.
>
> Iris' work in the genealogical community took an important turn in 1994
> when she accepted a position as Legislative Network Coordinator for the
> Genealogical & Historical Council of Sacramento Valley. This position
> evolved into a statewide Legislative Watch chairmanship under the auspices
> of the California State Genealogical Alliance. For nearly ten years, Iris
> kept tabs on pending legislation affecting preservation and access to
> records used by genealogists. In particular, she worked hard to retain
> open access to California's vital records. Her efforts were nationally
> recognized in 1996 when she was presented a Distinguished Service Award by
> the Federation of Genealogical Societies.
>
> The Council extends deepest sympathy to Iris' husband, Ralph Jones, and
> family. No services are scheduled at this time.
>
> Barbara Leak, President
> Genealogical & Historical Council of Sacramento Valley
> ______________________________________________________
> This email was pre-scanned by Spam Guardian
> A Service Provided by http://www.foothill.net
>
>
