I had a devil of a time, in fact years, to get this straightened out with the help of the church in England with their records. My mother was a Porter from Meductic, NB and I have been searching for John Porter the Loyalist for over 60+ years. We do know he was drown in the St. John River in the fall of 1783 and his widow Mary married John Fox and the widow gave birth spring of 1784 to a son, which was John Porter's. we have no idea when or where he was born or Mary's maiden name. Years ago there was a story handed down that he came from England with his wife and finding no work returned to England leaving his wife and baby here. But that is just a story. He was born abt 1760 as he was a young drummer in the Queens Rangers with Simcoe etc. I do thank you for clarifying that.
