Steve was raised in West Vancouver, but he spent
every weekend at the family's cabin in Whistler. Through his teens he
taught skiing for Whistler mountain, where his love of skiing and
mountain life touched the lives of those he worked and played with.
Steve pursued post secondary education and even worked in the business
world, but his heart was in the outdoors. He was grateful for his family, he cherished his
friendships, and lived a full life every day. She will be
exceedingly missed by her husband Gerry, her three daughters: Gena and
her husband David; Leanne and her husband Jonathan; and Michelle and
her husband Jason and her wonderful gifts, her grandchildren, Colby,
Tahlia, Joshua, Isabella and Ashton. She will also be dearly
remembered by her father Stanley and sister Darleen. Cheryl was the
shining center of the family, always generous, wise and loving. Her
daughters spoke to her almost every day seeking advice, reassurance,
comfort, guidance and companionship regarding all matters in their
lives and in respect to their loved ones. She was her husband's
sweetest friend and confidant. He relied on her for understanding and
counsel in all concerns of his life. Cheryl was born in Calgary,
Alberta but spent the majority of her life in Vancouver and Surrey.
She went to Moberly Elementary School where she first met Gerry and
then to Killarney and David Thompson High Schools where Gerry went as
well. She went on to UBC and Gerry followed her there, she into
Pharmacy and he into Commerce. They married in 1967 and were together
for the rest of her precious life. She practiced as a Pharmacist for
almost 40 years with most of those at the Peace Arch Hospital in White
Rock. She was a cheerleader in High School, at UBC and for the BC
Lions. She was cute and lively. She loved to dance, travel, ski, golf,
smile and laugh. She had the most infectious laugh that endeared her
to everyone. She loved her home and home to her was wherever her
family was. She also loved her home in Palm Springs, it was her place
of serenity. For those of us who knew her best we were lucky to have
had her in our lives. She formed and kept the family together, giving
all of us values that will ensure she will always be with us and
remembered. She created and left a family filled with love, affection
and loyalty. These attributes have made us strong and will keep us
together. How fortunate and blessed we were to have had her. The
family will honor Cheryl's life by setting up an Endowment at UBC for
the Pharmacy Department to those students in need of financial
assistance. Mabel was born in Fawcett, Alberta, on
November 7th, 1934. She survived a very premature birth, encumbered
with immediate and many long-lasting health issues. Her dedicated and
steadfast parents, Gustav and Emma Plitt, helped her to bravely endure
childhood and life-long challenges. Throughout her life, Mabel showed
remarkable perseverance in many things. Mabel highly valued her
siblings and, in adult years, their spouses, as well, being very
grateful to be a family together. She was the sister to Arthur who is
now deceased, and to Lily and Margaret, who lived for only a short
time. She is survived by Walter, Doreen, and Gordon. For 49 years,
Mabel has been the beloved and cherished wife of John, with whom she
lived a full and rewarding life, raising three children, Ruth (Gene),
Joyce (Fred), and Karl (Joyce), providing an open home for their
children's friends. She was the spunky and interested Oma for adoring
grandchildren: Joel, Joshua (Lin Lin), Jonathan, Ian, Isaac, Ashlee,
and Stephanie. All of her loved ones, know Mabel as loyal, and often
surprisingly understanding and comforting. She was a confidant for
many. Mabel was acutely interested and caring about others' struggles,
and an avid prayer warrior, interceding in prayer for others daily.
Challenges in her last year and especially in her last weeks and days
brought many of her strong inner qualities to sharper focus, and she
demonstrated perseverance in a mighty way, astounding medical
professionals with her determination and strength. Her loved ones will
miss her tremendously, but we celebrate her inspiring life and her
victorious arrival at home in Heaven. A Memorial Service is to be held
on Wednesday, January 7, at 2:00 p.m., First Lutheran Church, 5745
Wales Street, Vancouver, B.C. Milla was born on November 14, 1941 to John and Lydia (nee
Gerhardt) Fitterer in the German settlement of Halbstadt (near
Odessa), the Ukraine, USSR. From March through June 1944, to escape
oppression, her extended family survived a treacherous trek by horse
and wagon to Godetz, Poland. In January 1945, they fled Poland and
settled in Burgdorf, West Germany. During these flights, they
experienced terrible dangers and hardships as the front line of the
war passed over them six times. On arrival in western Europe, the
family was saved from deportation back to Soviet territory by an
understanding British military official. When Milla was six years old,
she was critically injured by being run over by a horse-drawn log
wagon, yet miraculously survived. Her family immigrated to Canada (the
Promised Land) in 1951 and settled in Kelowna, B.C. In 1954, they
moved to Victoria, B.C. where Milla continued her schooling,
graduating from St. Ann's Academy and earning her teaching certificate
from Victoria College. Muriel was born on May 12, 1915 in Michel, BC, the first child of
William and Gertrude McKeown. She was predeceased by her parents, her
brother William (Bill) and her sister Inez Todosychuk Cummings. Muriel
will be fondly remembered by brother Roger of Trail, BC, sister
Shirley McAdam of Toronto, and sister in law, Gertie (Mrs W. McKeown)
of Clearwater, BC in addition to nieces and nephews and many faithful
friends. Some may remember Muriel's mother who sang with the Victoria
Choral Society for many years. Muriel's earliest memories were of the
northern Okanagan although her school years were spent in Chilco, BC.
As a young woman she returned to the Okanagan, working at the
department store in Salmon Arm. The experience gained here led to
another move, to a position in Yellowknife with the Hudson Bay Fur
Trading Company. To qualify for her new post, Muriel was initiated as
a Hudson Bay Fur Trading Gentleman, a rare honour for a woman. In
1952, Muriel moved to Victoria, BC, to begin a new career with the
Department of Veteran's Affairs (DVA) at the Veteran's Hospital. In
the same year, she joined the Outdoor Club of Victoria and enjoyed
numerous excursions including climbing and camping in the Rockies.
More recently, Muriel became an enthusiastic participant in the local
Charles Dickens Reading Club. She also spent 14 years as a member of
the University of Victoria advisory committee for day and off-campus
programs for seniors. Muriel had a life long interest in learning and
she taught by example. After twenty six fulfilling years with the DVA,
Muriel enjoyed a long and happy retirement in Victoria and was known
as a keen gardener often with one of her cats as an assistant. Muriel
had a particular talent in making and fostering friendships. Her life
in later years was much enriched by the company of friends, and the
devotion of very dear long time companions. Muriel's family and
friends are most appreciative and thankful to her compassionate
caregivers and the staff at Glengarry Hospital. Kelly attended the University of Victoria,
publishing in the field of medieval manuscripts and spirituality.
