They were German and came aboard the ship named Nickar. If there is any further info regarding them, such as where they were from in Germany it would be greatly apppreciated. I believe there was a Canadian newspaper article from that time that actually quoted a Mrs. Bai

Important Note:
The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a relative who died at Cisco in May 1914. We know he worked on several bridges and structures for the railway. In 1911 Census he was working for the Dominion Bridge Company so I am presuming he still worked for them in 1914. I have seen photos taken of the area in that time period and what appears to be construction work, and an accident.

Important Note:
The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
The death registration simply says that Gid died of suffocation. I assumed
it was a train fire. I am in contact recently with Gid's granddaughter and
she is the one who said that the family lore was that it had to do with
espionage.

In a message dated 4/17/2008 5:45:16 P.M.
There were teams of known German saboteurs at work in the US in that period, and the track through Sioux Falls could have carried troops from the west of Canada to Halifax, where most of the troop transport ships left after the UBoat scare closed off the port at Quebec and most of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The only likely non-war cause of a derailment - since it was February - could have been ice-related.

Jay Underwood
>
> From: Trunthsams@aol.com
> Date: 2008/04/17 Thu PM 08:08:52 EDT
> To: canadian-train-disasters@rootsweb.com
> Subject: Re: [CANADIAN-TRAIN-DISASTERS] Souix Lookout 1916
>
> so we are talking German sabotage?
>
> Unless Gid was the only one to jump he was the only death for that date in
> Ontario death records. I guess he could have been unlucky and landed in a
> snow bank.
>
> So Gid's train would have been carrying something war related in Sioux
> Lookout of all places? Another train on the same track would be to cause a
> derailment?
>
> Bonnie
>
>
> In a message dated 4/17/2008 4:02:13 P.M. The government
> did not relase such information at the time, and there was no accident
> investigation board such as exists today.
> The press at the time had a code of self-imposed censorship so as not to
> raise public concern. This was broken briefly when Werner Von Horne attempted to
> blow up the bridge at Vanceboro, Maine, which was being used by the the CPR
> at the time. I am working on the details of a derailment in Nova Scotia that
> might have been sabotage involving a train carrying benzol, just months
> before the Halifax Explosion, but the press coverage is scanty and there is no
> suggestion of sabotage even though it must surely have been on everyone's mind.
> Certainly the Intercolonial Railway (CN's predecessor) was aware of the
> potential for sabotage. The viaduct at East Mines NS is still "gaurded" by the
> remnants of gun pits that were manned by members of my old regiment in the
> First World World War.
>
> Jay Underwood
> Nova Scotia Railway Heritage Society
>
>
> >
> > From: Trunthsams@aol.com
> > Date: 2008/04/17 Thu PM 06:34:34 EDT
> > To: CANADIAN-TRAIN-DISASTERS@rootsweb.com
> > Subject: [CANADIAN-TRAIN-DISASTERS] Souix Lookout 1916
> >
> > There was a train wreck or incident on Feb.17, 1916 at mile post 1481/2
>
> > The family believes that they were told that there were two trains on the
> track
> > and some sort of espionage going on. The engineer, Gid Fairbairn, jumped
> > off and landed in a snow back and suffocated in the snow. Looking at the
> death
> > registrations for that date and place Gid was the only one to die.
> >
> > Could this have been intentional and espionage?
