Searching thru my Cleland file, I find a Margaret Cleland marriage to George Leishman in Mar. 1793 in New Monkland. Lanark, Scotland from the LDS IGI files which should be available to you free on www.familysearch.org. It might be a generation or 2 back from your listing but worth checking out.
Dorothy Libby
____________________________________________________________
Click to shop and compare great deals on trucks.
http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2141/fc/Ioyw6i3l1wbXu00mOXvPAn4rMLUUS3bl28X9Exzum15CrlAjeYtfdD/

[CLAN-CLELAND] Admin Note re Genealogical Posts to the Clan Cleland List

Dear Clan Cleland Posters:

Please bear in mind that the genealogical portion of the Clan Cleland
list should keep within the time frame of the Clan System being active
in Scotland. This would be up through 1745-47 as it was quashed
following the Jacobite Wars.

This is not to say that the Clan Cleland list is not for genealogical
queries and posts. This is to provide a reminder that it is CLAN
specific and not general in time and place. Period circa 1000 through
1747 and Scotland, Ireland, Europe in geographic nature. Think of
those under the Clan system and where they would have been, as such.
Where and when their Chiefs resided, origins of the name and time
frame/locations descended from.

Remember that clan lists are more inclusive than strictly Genealogy
and History.

If you are looking for general genealogy of the Cleland Family, then
the Cleland surname list and board is where to find it.

If you are looking to find out more about Clan Cleland then this is
the list for you. It is clan specfic, not genealogy specific.
Genealogy on this list is focused on that of the Clan era... up
through circa 1747 and only in the areas of the Scottish clans...
Scotland, Ireland and a bit of Europe. Not the USA, Canada or
Australia, etc.

To subscribe to any list at Rootsweb, send a message to
listname-request@rootsweb.com where "listname" is substituted for the
name of the list.
ie. cleland-request@rootsweb.com

Yours Aye,

Lauren M.
Hi Bill
I've since had a bit of success with finding out info on my husband's
Cleland family.
The record that you saw on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk was the marriage
between Jeanie's parents: Alexander Cleland and Elizabeth Buchanan
Madden - married 1884 in Dennistoun in Glasgow.
Which Cleland line do you descend from?

Best wishes
Rachel

On 10/1/07, wjcleland@comcast.net <wjcleland@comcast.net> wrote:
> Hi Rachel
> Sorry we weren't successful the first try. I checked on the Web site
> Scotlandspeople.com and found only one Cleland marrying a Madden in the whole of
> Scotland. It was in Lanarkshire in a town name Dennistoun. I didn't go any
> further since it was a pay as you go site.
>
> You might also try posting a message on Ancestry.com for Cleland/Madden with son
> Peter. Its worth a try.
>
> Keep me informed how you fare.
>
> Bill
> -------------- Original message ----------------------
> From: "Rachel Shelley" <rachel.shelley@gmail.com>
> > Hi Bill
> > thanks so much for all the information you've sent me.
> > My in laws have now thrown a spanner in the works because yesterday they
> > told me that Alexander Cleland was a tailor who taught daughter Jeannie how
> > to tailor. The story goes (as told by Jeannie's daughter Elizabeth many
> > years ago) that she learnt the craft from her father, Alexander. Apparently
> > she was sheilded behind a curtain when she sewed mens clothing because in
> > those days women weren't allowed to tailor mens trousers!
> > The only census records for any Alexander Cleland of Glasgow show is
> > occupation as: Joiner... I can't find any Alexanders on censuses that were
> > tailors... so goodness knows where I'll go to from here. My husband's aunty
> > Jean Cleland Van Rensburg nee Shelley gave me Jeannie's parents as Alexander
> > Cleland and Elizabeth Buchanan Madden and she hasn't gone back further from
> > that, unfortunately.
> > I'm new to researching Scottish ancestry, so don't quite know what plan of
> > attack to take next.
> > I think I might try writing to Jean to verify the 'tailor' story...
> > Thanks so much, Bill
> >
> > Kind regards
> > Rachel
> >
> >
> > On 5/13/07, wjcleland@comcast.net <wjcleland@comcast.net> wrote:
> > >
> > > Hi Rachel;
> > > I don't have much.
> > > Peter Cleland married Elizabeth White 23 March 1860 Glasgow Central
> > > District
> > > Children:
> > > Alexander b. 10 Apr 1860 Glasgow Central District
> > > Agnes b. 29 Dec 1861 Glasgow Central District
> > > Robert White b.4 Jan 1864 Glasgow Central District
> > > The following children were recorded as being born to Peter and Elizabeth
> > > Whyte. Since they were born in the Central District, and I cannot find
> > > another marriage of Peter to a Whyte, I am making an assumption that they
> > > are of the same family with the last name recorded differently.
> > > Elizabeth Patterson b. 13 May 1866
> > > William b. 11 Apr 1868
> > > Agnes b. 19 Nov 1869
> > > William b. 22 Mar 1872
> > > Jessie b. 5 Apr 1874
> > >
> > > I also found
> > > Alexander Cleland married Mary McMurroch in Gorbals 11Jun1831 and had a
> > > child named Peter on 20 Jun 1831.
> > > This is the only Peter I found born in the 1830s but records are sketchy
> > > and it may or may not be your line. Since the custom of the Scots was to
> > > name the first male after his grandfather it may well be yours.

>
>
>
> >
> > Hi Rachel;
> >
Since most
> > of your line centered about Glasgow Central District, the town of Gorbals
> > appears out of place. However families did move to follow the work.
> >
> > Hope this helps you to get a starting point in your search. Good
> > Luck.
Hi Bill

thanks for the tip off. I was so excited and went along to Scotlandspeople's
website, paid for 30 credits, searched and found the link that would show
the record. But there is an error with displaying the image and I've wasted
21 credits on trying to display an image. I've written to the website's
people, but don't know if I'll have any luck in getting them to either
refund the wasted credits or send me the record/image itself.
Never mind. 9 credits left now...

Thanks for your help : )
Regards
Rachel

On 5/14/07, wjcleland@comcast.net <wjcleland@comcast.net> wrote:
>
> Hi Rachel
> Sorry we weren't successful the first try. The story goes (as told by Jeannie's daughter Elizabeth many
> > years ago) that she learnt the craft from her father, Alexander.
> Apparently
> > she was sheilded behind a curtain when she sewed mens clothing because
> in
> > those days women weren't allowed to tailor mens trousers!
> > The only census records for any Alexander Cleland of Glasgow show is
> > occupation as: Joiner... I can't find any Alexanders on censuses that
> were
> > tailors... so goodness knows where I'll go to from here.
Hi Rachel
Sorry we weren't successful the first try. I checked on the Web site
Scotlandspeople.gov.uk and found only one Cleland marrying a Madden in the whole of

>
>
>
> >
> > Hi Rachel;
> >
Since most
> > of your line centered about Glasgow Central District, the town of Gorbals
> > appears out of place. However families did move to follow the work.
> >
> > Hope this helps you to get a starting point in your search. Good
> > Luck.
Hi Bill
thanks so much for all the information you've sent me.

>
> Hi Rachel;
>
Since most
> of your line centered about Glasgow Central District, the town of Gorbals
> appears out of place. However families did move to follow the work.
>
> Hope this helps you to get a starting point in your search. Good
> Luck.
Hi Rachel;
I don't have much.
Peter Cleland married Elizabeth White 23 March 1860 Glasgow Central District
Children:
Alexander b. 10 Apr 1860 Glasgow Central District
Agnes b. 29 Dec 1861 Glasgow Central District
Robert White b.4 Jan 1864 Glasgow Central District
The following children were recorded as being born to Peter and Elizabeth Whyte. Since they were born in the Central District, and I cannot find another marriage of Peter to a Whyte, I am making an assumption that they are of the same family with the last name recorded differently.
Elizabeth Patterson b. 13 May 1866
William b. 11 Apr 1868
Agnes b. 19 Nov 1869
William b. 22 Mar 1872
Jessie b. 5 Apr 1874

I also found
Alexander Cleland married Mary McMurroch in Gorbals 11Jun1831 and had a child named Peter on 20 Jun 1831.
This is the only Peter I found born in the 1830s but records are sketchy and it may or may not be your line. Since the custom of the Scots was to name the first male after his grandfather it may well be yours. Since most of your line centered about Glasgow Central District, the town of Gorbals appears out of place. However families did move to follow the work.

Hope this helps you to get a starting point in your search. Good Luck. If you think I can help any further let me know.

Bill

-------------- Original message ----------------------
From: "Rachel Shelley" <rachel.shelley@gmail.com>
> Hi Bill
> I wasn't aware of the Scottish IGI, so I don't have it already - I'm really
> keen to have any information that you do have - how exciting!
> Thanks so much
> Rachel
>
>
> On 5/12/07, wjcleland@comcast.net <wjcleland@comcast.net> wrote:
> >
> > Hi Rachel,
> > Sorry, I don't have any connection to your line.
