[CLAN-CUMMING] old Beattie/Cumming family bible

Hi all. I recently acquired a very old bible that apparently belonged to
David BEATTIE, who was born 1828. His wife was Isabella H. CUMMING, born
1826. This family lived mostly in Orange Co., NY. Children of David and
Isabella were:

Thomas Cumming BEATTIE 1859
Sarah Allice Beattie 1857
Isabella Hamilton BEATTIE 1859
William C. BEATTIE 1862

This bible was published in 1857. There are many of the families birth,
death, and marriages recorded in the bible.

Sarah Alice married James McWilliams. Isabella Hamilton married Robert
McCready. Thomas C. married Ruby MILLER.

I am not connected to this family, and would like to be able to put the
bible in the hands of a descendant. If anyone is connected to this family,
or know of anyone that is connected, please feel free to contact me.

Dear Listers:

I appologize for making this a bit generic, however it is going out to
at least 70 clans lists. Please substitute the name of your clan
where I have left it as "clan-name".

You may or may not have received the message that Rootsweb sent out
Friday from List Announce. It apparently is taking quite some time to
generate to all the subscribers of all 30,000+ lists at Rootsweb.com

Some ISPs may also be blocking mail from the Lists9 Server due to the
sheer number of messages being distributed.

In order to continue to have mailing lists for us it was necessary to
make some changes. That is what the Announcement message was alerting
to. Rootsweb is changing, not upgrading their list software on their
computers. The old software, Smartlist, is no longer supported and was
held together with bailing wire and bubble gum. It became a situation
of change it now or no lists. So... we will accept the change to the
new software, mailman.

There is nothing you need to do... it is on their computers and will
not be needed on yours.

RootsWeb is preparing to migrate all mailing lists to a new and
updated list management system. I participated in the initial tests of
the new software. When the list has been migrated, there will be some
changes but most have to do with the list administration tools.

There is a message list that was created to support the migration....
List-Updates@rootsweb.com It is NOT required that you subscribe to
it. And you may not want to.... in about a 24 hour period, there were
no less than 317 messages posted to it. It is confusing to most
"users". However, it is there so you can have your questions responded
to. I participated in the Beta Test and can respond to some of your
questions even if you do not subscribe to that list.

For list subscribers, the changeover should be smooth. However there
is one significant change you should be aware of. The new management
system treats both the digest ("-D") and regular delivery ("-L")
lists as a single list with two delivery options-digest or regular.
This means that the "-L" or "-D" is dropped from the list name within
the system so the list becomes Clan-Name (NO "L").

This sounds like a big change, but it actually won't affect the way
the list functions
that much.

Below is a list of the ways this change may affect you:

- You can choose to drop the "-L" or "-D" in the list email address when sending
messages to the list. That means messages sent to
Clan-Name@rootsweb.com will be sent directly to the list. Sending a
message to Clan-Name-L@rootsweb.com will also continue to work.

- You can use either Clan-Name-L-request@rootsweb.com or
Clan-Name-request@rootsweb.com to subscribe to the regular list
delivery. To subscribe to the list digest, continue to send your
"subscribe" email to Clan-Name-D-request@rootsweb.com.

Your current subscriptions will be migrated over so if you are
currently subscribed
to the digest, you will continue to be subscribed to the digest.

- (not many do this but as some do, I am including this...) You will
no longer be able
to receive both the digest and the regular delivery ("-L") versions of
the list at the same email address. If you are currently subscribed
to both "-L" and "-D" with the same address, you will only continue to
be subscribed to regular delivery when the list is migrated. You will
need to subscribe to the list digest with a different address.

- You can unsubscribe from the regular delivery or digest by sending
your "unsubscribe" message to a single email:
Clan-Name-request@rootsweb.com.

Other changes you might notice include:
- Changes to the layout, volume and issue numbers of the digests.
- New "welcome" and "goodbye" and other messages.
- New message footers.
- The "from" email will be different (no "-L") so some messages may be
sent to your
"junk" folder.

For those of you that filter your mail, if you need to adjust your
filters, the following have been suggested. Filter on either of these
fields, changing "listname" to the actual name of the list:

X-BeenThere: clan-name@rootsweb.com
List-Id: clan-name.rootsweb.com
X-Loop: clan-name@rootsweb.com

Please report anything unusual or confusing that you find during this
transition period
to me at Clan-Name-admin@rootsweb.com. If you do not find mail in your
mailbox over the next couple of weeks... check the archives. As
mentioned in the beginning, there may be some issues with ISPs while
the migration of ALL 30,000+ lists occurs.

It may be necessary for you to resubscribe. I will not be aware of any
"issues" until your address bounces off the list. And from what I have
observed so far, I will not be able to pinpoint why it may have.
Digest subscribers -- I expect that I will hear from some of you as
the way you receive your digest may appear differently.... I have a
fix for it.... just email me.

The Clan lists will be among the first to migrate to the new system.
There should
be no interruption in the flow of your mail. You may not even notice
the change when it occurs. I will be notified in the same manner that
Admins are notified of receipt of a newly established list and will
need to rebuild our Welcome Message, etc.

Eventually, there will be a website you can go to to more proactively
manage your
mail and even have the option to turn mail off when you go on vacation
rather than
unsubscribe! The drawback is that you will have to remember to turn it back on!

Bear it mind, that as with all things, it is a PLAN... and subject to change.

Keep an eye on the Help Desk page to see if there are any notices that
may affect your experience in the next few weeks.

I will post a message after the lists migrate. If you do not receive
it, but see it in the
archives, first check your spam folders and second, resubscribe if you
still do not find it. The subscription lists are expected to migrate
without incident, but anything is possible when done on this large a
scale.

AOL users, you will need to mark any messages found in the spam
folders as "this is not spam" in order to retrain AOLs servers.

If you are looking for general genealogy of the Cumming
Family, then then Cumming surname list where to find it.
If you are looking to find out more about Clan Cumming
then this is the list for you. It is a clan specfic, not genealogy
specific list. Genealogy on this list is focused on that of the
Clan era... up through circa 1747 and only in the areas of the
Scottish clans... Scotland, Ireland and a bit of Europe. Not
the USA, Canada or Australia, etc.

To subscribe to any list at Rootsweb, send a message to
listname-L@rootsweb.com where "listname" is substituted
for the name of the list. If you prefer digests to single messages

Admin Note re Genealogical Posts to the Clan Cumming Board and List

Dear Clan Cumming Posters:

Please bear in mind that the genealogical portion of the Clan Cumming list and board should keep within the time frame of the Clan System being active in Scotland. This would be up through 1745-47 as it was quashed following the Jacobite Wars.

Should you post genealogical queries to the Board and find them "deleted", take a look to the Cumming Surname Board as I likely have moved them to the surname board where they are more appropriate to the topic. [If you have a variant spelling used in your post, they may be moved to a board that share that spelling, if it exists, otherwise they will go to Cumming.]

This is not to say that the Clan Cumming list and board are not for genealogical queries and posts. This is to provide a reminder that they are CLAN specific and not general in time and place. Period circa 1000 through 1747 and Scotland, Ireland, Europe in geographic nature. Think of those under the Clan system and where they would have been, as such. Where and when their Chiefs resided, origins of the name and time frame/locations descended from.

Remember that clan lists and boards are more inclusive than strictly Genealogy and History, but that there are guidelines as posted by John Hansen when he created the Boards.

Long-lost Great Uncle

I am looking to track down descendants of or anyone who knows anything about my long-lost great uncle who stayed behind in Scotland when the rest of his siblings, mother and step-father emigrated to Canada in 1922-23.

My great grandmother was Christina R. Seivwright, born 1882 in Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland to Alexander Seivewight & Ann Gordon. I have recently discovered that before she was married to my great-grandfather, she had a son illegitimately. His name was Alexander Sievewright Cumming (the father was William Brodie Cumming born 16 May 1874 in Fordyce, Banffshire to George Cumming & Margaret Stevenson). Alexander was known as "Sandy" and he was born 13 September 1902 at Seafield, Rathven, Banffshire. I had always just thought that "Sandy" was the older (full-blood) brother of my grandfather, and therefore had the Barron surname, so I was always looking in wrong places.

Christina married my great-grandfather Alexander Walker Barron on 2 June 1905 at Rathven, Banffshire. At the time of their marriage, Alexander W. Barron was living on North Castle street in Cullen and was employed as a coachman. Christina resided in Seafield, Rathven and was employed as a fishmonger and domestic servant. He had served as a Bombardier in the 53rd Battery of the Royal Field Artillery in the Boer War and was still with the Royal Field Artillery in 1914. In 1917, he was Sergeant 85525 with the Fife Yeomanry.

Alexander W. Barron & Christina R. Seivwright had several children:

John Walker Barron (born 6 August 1905 at 49 Seafield Street, Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland. He served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada during WWII. He died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada),

Mary Isabella Barron (born 17 March 1907 at 28 Reidhaven Street, Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland. Died in Owen Sound, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada),

Alice Gordon Barron (born 12 April 1909 at Forgieside, Boharm, Banff-shire, Scotland. Died of cancer in the late 1940's in Toronto, Ontario, Canada),

George Brian Tore Barron who was my grandfather (born 24 December 1914 at 36 Pennan Village, Aberdour, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Died 24 December 1988 at Perth Community Care Centre, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada),

Joseph Colin Barron (born 4 December 1917 at 21 Bristo Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Died tragically in the early 1990's in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada during WWII),

Anne Barron (born in 1920 in Scotland, although we cannot locate a birth record for her there. She is still living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

Alexander W. & Christina R. (Seivwright) Barron and all of their children, except "Sandy" left Scotland and settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada about 1922-23 when they are found in the Toronto directory. They kept in touch with "Sandy" regularly until the years around WWII, when they lost contact. We've always assumed that he died serving in WWII, but he cannot be found on the Commonwealth Graves website. I realize that by the time that they lost touch he may not have even been living in Scotland anymore. I have no idea where to go next with my search.

If anyone has any information at all on my grandfathers long-lost half-brother, Alexander "Sandy" Sievewright Cumming or how I could go about finding out what happened to him please contact me. This has always been a huge family mystery and my goal is to solve it before the last of my grandfather's generation passes away (his youngest sibling, Ann is still alive). My ggggfather ALEXANDER Cumming (son of John Cumming and Jean STEVEN [
or STIVEN ]) was born 25 Dec 1809 at Little Dunkeld , Perthshire. He
lived at Boleglash , Methven where he had 12 kids (John, Christian,
James1, Robert, Peter, Jane, Ann, Alexander, Janet, David, Gilbert and
James2 ). Most coming to NZ in about 1870.
Alexander (Snr) had: a sister JANET who married Gilbert ROBERTSON and
lived at 131 King Street, Crieff ; and possibly a brother chr. in Crieff
, 27 Jun 1806.
Some graves are in the Monzie churchyard.

The Scottish Information Society (SIS), formed 1987, is comprised of and exists
in support of those who volunteer their time at the clan tents, working events at
various venues. One member delegate from each Clan, House or Scottish Society is
invited to join to represent their officially recognized clan/society organization.

We are in the process of revamping our web site http://www.scottishinfo.org It
is currently off line, however, it is our hope to have it back up and functional
before the end of April. We hope to include many helpful elements for the public
to view. Currently one of the major projects in process is a comprehensive games
listing for all 50 US states. In future, we hope to be able to add an International
games listing.

New to list

Hi, I am new to the list and researching Cumming in the Hawick area. Below
is my family. If anyone is related to me or knows where I can find Robert's
parents I would appreciate hearing from you.

A deceased 3rd cousin did a family tree years ago (about 1960) and had my
Walter son of William Cumming who in turn was son of Robert Cumming and
Marion Lillico but I have proof my Walter is Robert Cumming and Isabella
Laing's son. I can't find any record of Robert being born in Hawick or
Askirk but his children where and on the 1851 census it was put he was born
in Askirk. On Robert and Isabella's bans it had Pathhead after Robert's name
and Hawick after Isabella's (I don't know if Pathhead is important).
Another thought is that my first Robert could be a child of Robert Cumming
and Mary/ion Lillico but can only find 7 registered children for them in
Hawick and Robert isn't one (but by the naming pattern there should have
been a child named Robert). I can't find Robert and Marion's marriage
information to see if they were married before or after my Robert's birth.
Robert and Marion had a daughter Margaret married in July 1838, and my
Robert had a daughter Margaret born Sept 1838 and I wonder if mine is named
after an Aunt that was married. On the Margaret's marriage information it
says her grandfather was from Fogo Neuk near Dunse Berwickshire. Another
peice of information says her grandfather was William Cumming and Margaret
Hoe (but the last two pieces of info came from my deceased relative and I
have no knowledge of where it came from).
I have done searches on Scotspeople's website and can't find anything about
eitehr Robert's parents. I have searched the freecen site and found most on
censuses. Over the past year I have put inquiries on the Roxburgh list and
recieved some info about spouses and children's families but nothing on the
two Roberts.
Anyways, my long windedness problally has turned a few away, but I am hoping
someone can help, many thanks,

Roxburgh, Scotland, and died March 22, 1907 in Wellington St., Campbellford
Ontario. He married (1) ISABELLA DEANS August 9, 1852 in Wilton or Hawick,
Roxburg, Scotland, daughter of JAMES DEANS and CHRISTIAN LANG. She was born
June 19, 1830 in Cavers, Roxburgh, Scotland, and died Bef. 1879. He married
(2) MINA NELSON September 19, 1879 in Cornwall, Ontario,. She was born
August 12, 1843 in Scotland, and died March 31, 1926 in Campbellford Ontario
.
