<title>Re: [CLAN-DRUMMOND] Welcome to the &#x22;CLAN-DRUMMOND&#x22; mailing list: 1st Posting my Drummond interests</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-DRUMMOND/2008-08/1218968380</link>
<description>Good morning everyone, this is my first posting to the list and I am hoping&#x3C;BR&#x3E;some of you may be able to add to my knowledge and may indeed be distant&#x3C;BR&#x3E;cousins.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My 5 x great grandparents are David Drummond commonly called &#x22;of Gartfarran&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and Christian Graeme(Graham) married 30th April 1748 in Drymen.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;David Drummond is believed to be one of 4 brother, sons of Gartfarran who it&#x3C;BR&#x3E;is assumed was a very minor cog in the hierarchy of Drummond Lairds. It is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;believed all 4 sons were born in the period 1710-1730.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;David&#x27;s brothers were:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Duncan Drummond: no information held on him&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Andrew Drummond: married to Janet McFarlane&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Walter Drummond: believed to be the eldest son, married Janet McNeil on 21st&#x3C;BR&#x3E;May 1728 in Drymen with a large family. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Some of you may know or have corresponded with John Ward in Australia who is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;a descendant of Walter and Janet.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;David Drummond and Christian Graeme had a son John Drummond who married Mary&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Gray on 20th May 1772.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In the marriage entry in the OPR John is described as son of David Drummond&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and Mary as daughter of Duncan Gray. Duncan Gray was married to Margaret&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Blair daughter of Robert Blair. Without specific information I assume Mary&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Gray would have been born around 1750, her parents Duncan Gray and Margaret&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Blair between 1720 and 1730 and her grandfather Robert Blair between 1680&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and 1700.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The surnames Blair, McFarlane/MacFarlane, Gray and Blair appear on 4&#x3C;BR&#x3E;separate occasions in the same generations of my ancestors in the area&#x3C;BR&#x3E;around Drymen and Port of Menteith with the obvious conclusion that there&#x3C;BR&#x3E;were several inter-family marriages among cousins and second cousins etc.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;David Drummond&#x27;s wife Christian Grame or Graham is an interesting person. I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;know her parents were John Grame and Isabel Blair.  Corresponding with among&#x3C;BR&#x3E;others Belinda Dettmann one of the major contributors to the Stewarts of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Balquidder website has identified that the only possible candidate for this&#x3C;BR&#x3E;woman is:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Christian Graham born 1723 daughter of John Graham of Callziemuck and his&#x3C;BR&#x3E;wife Isobel Blair who were married in Port of Menteith on 5th April 1722.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In Stirnet and on a number of Graham genealogies, Christian is shown as the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;second wife of her cousin John Graham of Nether Glenny whom she married on&#x3C;BR&#x3E;30th November 1760. John Graham was already a widower with 2 young daughters&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and he and Christian did not have any children though given that she died&#x3C;BR&#x3E;before 3rd December 1768 when John Graham married his 3rd wife, it is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;possible Christian died in or as a consequence of childbirth and her child&#x3C;BR&#x3E;died too. John Graham had children with his 3rd wife as well.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;So having narrated all of the above, can anyone add to my knowledge,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;disprove anything or assist in any way?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Regards,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Mark&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;No virus found in this outgoing message.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Checked by AVG. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Version: 7.5.526 / Virus Database: 270.6.4/1616 - Release Date: 16/08/2008&#x3C;BR&#x3E;17:12&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[CLAN-DRUMMOND] American descendants of 17th c Scottish poet William Drummond?</title>

<description>Greetings,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I&#x27;m wondering if anyone on the list might know if the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;17th century Scottish poet William Drummond (b 1585,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Midlothian to John Drummond and Susannah Fowler) who&#x3C;BR&#x3E;married Elizabeth Logan had any descendants who went&#x3C;BR&#x3E;to the American colonies. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My understanding is that he had nine children but I&#x27;ve&#x3C;BR&#x3E;been unable to find any extensive information online&#x3C;BR&#x3E;about his descendants.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks for any insights you might have.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Best regards,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kenneth&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E; ____________________________________________________________________________________&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Never miss a thing. This initiative is directed worldwide at all those with an affinity to Scotland. There can be no greater affinity than that of the clan member, and a major International Clan Gathering is being planned to support this exciting initiative.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Gathering will take the form of a major Highland Games, but with the addition of a special clan ceremony, designed by the producers of the Edinburgh Tattoo. This will be held on the magnificent castle esplanade and will commemorate the contribution made by the clans to the culture and history of Scotland. The Gathering is being hosted by the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, and it is hoped that all clan associations will attend.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This year will be dedicated to planning and creating awareness for the event, and more importantly, developing special Gathering tour packages, which will be made available in 2008.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Gathering 2009 Ltd has opened offices in Edinburgh, and is in the early stages of planning and designing the event. Please visit http://www.thegathering2009.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;As the first recipients of this news, please communicate it to as many of your clan members as possible. We will be working closely clan organisations worldwide, and will be attending major Games and festivals throughout 2007 and 2008 to help promote the Gathering.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Important Note:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. <title>Re: [CLAN-DRUMMOND] Beat surname</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-DRUMMOND/2007-05/1179116611</link>
<description>Thanks for your reply, Carol. Yes, I&#x27;ve Googled the name Beat - in very &#x3C;BR&#x3E;distant history, the family served some of Clan MacDonald as &#x27;surgeons.&#x27; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;(Found that in an old Scottish history book.) In nearer history, there are &#x3C;BR&#x3E;comparatively few found and none historically noted that I&#x27;ve yet &#x3C;BR&#x3E;discovered. A few today live in Fife, Perth and Kinross - but I and US &#x3C;BR&#x3E;cousins have thus far had no luck tracing our branch through living members. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Our family records show consistency in the spelling as Beat - but there are &#x3C;BR&#x3E;possible variations on the spelling of the name back in the days before &#x3C;BR&#x3E;spelling became standardized.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;We think we&#x27;ve traced our immigrant Beat ancestors to Methven in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Perthshire - just need to triangulate that.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thank you for the suggestion tracing through the family Watson. I have not &#x3C;BR&#x3E;yet tried that but most certainly will. We travel extensively as part of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;our work, so (as you can see from the time on this email), I currently steal &#x3C;BR&#x3E;time for genealogy!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Carole&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: &#x3C;Gra8teach@aol.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: &#x3C;clan-drummond@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2007 9:41 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: Re: [CLAN-DRUMMOND] Beat surname&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Carole have you googled the Beat name? <title>[CLAN-DRUMMOND] surname Beat</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-DRUMMOND/2007-05/1178806791</link>
<description>There is a tradition (which we have not substantiated) in our Beat family of affiliation with Clan Drummond.  My Beat ancestors came to Dane Co., Wisconsin, in the United States from Methven Parish in Perthshire or the area around it in the mid-1800s.  Scottish family names in addition to Beat include Dryden, Edie, Henderson, and Watson.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My Beat great-grandfather, the first generation born in the United States, spoke the Gaelic and cherished tartan items, which have not survived for us to identify.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I find none of these names on the sept list given on the Clan Drummond website.  Do you know if any of these names were affiliated with the Clan or any of the septs?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Any information will be much appreciated.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Carole Beat Geiger&#x3C;BR&#x3E;cbgeiger@cgc.bz &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>Old Easter Egg customs</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-DRUMMOND/2006-04/1145161742</link>
<description>The custom of giving eggs at the time of the Spring Equinox was known to  the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;early Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Gauls and many other people. This  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;ancient fertility symbol was adapted by early Christianity in connection with &#x3C;BR&#x3E; the miracle of the Resurrection and the Feast of Eggs became attached to the &#x3C;BR&#x3E; celebration of Easter. In Scotland eggs were also used in the Beltane rites &#x3C;BR&#x3E;( 1  May ), and like bannocks, were rolled downhill in imitation of the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;movement of  the sun. In Christian times, the rolling of the egg is supposed to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;represent the  rolling away of the the stone from the tomb of the risen Christ. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The practice of colouring the eggs is also ancient. The Persians dyed theirs  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;red, and still use coloured eggs representing the flowers of the field. In  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Scotland, country bairns used to gather whin blossoms and other growing things  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with which to dye their eggs. Commercial Easter Eggs seem to dominate &#x3C;BR&#x3E;now-a-days  but it is far more fun for bairns, of all ages, to make the real thing! &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Eggs are  traditionally given out on Easter Sunday and lets revive the practise &#x3C;BR&#x3E;of rolling  your Pasch ( Scots for Easter ) Egg. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Easter Eggs - take as many  eggs as necessary, 1 pt of water, 2 teaspoonfuls &#x3C;BR&#x3E;salt and for decoration: onion  skins, flower petals, cochineal or other &#x3C;BR&#x3E;colouring matter for dyeing. Put eggs,  dyeing material and salt in a pan - bring &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to the boil slowly and simmer for  about 20 minutes. The dyed eggs can be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;further decorated with paint and crayons  with drawings and patterns. Just use your &#x3C;BR&#x3E;imagination. Sinsyne awa an rowe yir  Pasch Egg! &#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Reprinted from Electric Scotland&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
