This initiative is directed worldwide at all those with an affinity to Scotland. There can be no greater affinity than that of the clan member, and a major International Clan Gathering is being planned to support this exciting initiative.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Gathering will take the form of a major Highland Games, but with the addition of a special clan ceremony, designed by the producers of the Edinburgh Tattoo. This will be held on the magnificent castle esplanade and will commemorate the contribution made by the clans to the culture and history of Scotland. The Gathering is being hosted by the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, and it is hoped that all clan associations will attend.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This year will be dedicated to planning and creating awareness for the event, and more importantly, developing special Gathering tour packages, which will be made available in 2008.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Gathering 2009 Ltd has opened offices in Edinburgh, and is in the early stages of planning and designing the event. Please visit http://www.thegathering2009.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;As the first recipients of this news, please communicate it to as many of your clan members as possible. We will be working closely clan organisations worldwide, and will be attending major Games and festivals throughout 2007 and 2008 to help promote the Gathering.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Important Note:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. <link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-FERGUSSON/2006-11/1164524847</link>
<description>Hello Neil:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1752 would be some 7 years following the Jacobite Wars and the Battle of Culloden wherein Scotland lost to England.  The result was an attempt to break up the clan system.  There was a proscription against wearing of Tartan, playing bagpipes (considered an instrument of war) and other items.  The first infraction was 6 months in prison.  The second caused the offender to be transported across the sea for 7 years.  This is how many Scots ended up in America or Australia.  And those that were not sent away by the government found a way to go on their own, rather than put up with English tyranny.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This was a tumultuous time in Scottish history.  Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the young Pretender to the Scottish throne, lost his bid to reclaim it, as did his father before him.  The clans, many of them, fought gallantly beside him.  Those that did, are known as Jacobites.  If you go to the Scottish games and see men with a white ribbon on their bonnet (hat), you will know them as from a Jacobite clan.  It is called a &#x22;white cockade.&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Many died in that final battle against England.  Clan Chiefs were killed in battle and others, including that of my family, were tried as traitors and beheaded at the Tower of London by August of 1747.  Lands and titles were forfeit.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Most of the highland Fergussons, except those in Argyll, supported the exiled Stuarts, and many of them were out in the &#x22;Forty Five&#x22; on the Jacobite side. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I would encourage you to read more of the history of the times... it will serve you well in doing your genealogy.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Yours Aye,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Lauren M. <description>Hi,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My gggg-grandfather Hugh Fergus left Scotland between March of 1752 and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1754 for America. His &#x3C;BR&#x3E;second child was baptized in Baron Parish, Glasgow and his subsequent &#x3C;BR&#x3E;children were baptized in the Pennsylvania colony.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Neil Fergus Johnson&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>Old Easter Egg customs</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-FERGUSSON/2006-04/1145161742</link>
<description>The custom of giving eggs at the time of the Spring Equinox was known to  the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;early Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Gauls and many other people. This  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;ancient fertility symbol was adapted by early Christianity in connection with &#x3C;BR&#x3E; the miracle of the Resurrection and the Feast of Eggs became attached to the &#x3C;BR&#x3E; celebration of Easter. In Scotland eggs were also used in the Beltane rites &#x3C;BR&#x3E;( 1  May ), and like bannocks, were rolled downhill in imitation of the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;movement of  the sun. In Christian times, the rolling of the egg is supposed to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;represent the  rolling away of the the stone from the tomb of the risen Christ. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The practice of colouring the eggs is also ancient. The Persians dyed theirs  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;red, and still use coloured eggs representing the flowers of the field. In  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Scotland, country bairns used to gather whin blossoms and other growing things  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with which to dye their eggs. Commercial Easter Eggs seem to dominate &#x3C;BR&#x3E;now-a-days  but it is far more fun for bairns, of all ages, to make the real thing! &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Eggs are  traditionally given out on Easter Sunday and lets revive the practise &#x3C;BR&#x3E;of rolling  your Pasch ( Scots for Easter ) Egg. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Easter Eggs - take as many  eggs as necessary, 1 pt of water, 2 teaspoonfuls &#x3C;BR&#x3E;salt and for decoration: onion  skins, flower petals, cochineal or other &#x3C;BR&#x3E;colouring matter for dyeing. Put eggs,  dyeing material and salt in a pan - bring &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to the boil slowly and simmer for  about 20 minutes. The dyed eggs can be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;further decorated with paint and crayons  with drawings and patterns. Just use your &#x3C;BR&#x3E;imagination. Sinsyne awa an rowe yir  Pasch Egg! &#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Reprinted from Electric Scotland&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
