He was Lieutenant in the 1st Royal Carron Regiment, Carron Parish, Aberlour, Scotland. He fought under General Wolfe at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759 during the Seven Years War. As a soldier he earned the right to draw land and settle in Canada but he chose to return to Scotland under half-pay. William gave his eldest son Lewis &#x22;Power of Attorney&#x22; to draw the land to which he, William, was entitled and never claimed. Two of William's sons went to the USA about the same time that Lewis came to Canada. He left a will recorded on 11 May 1804. He died on 13 Jun 1810 at Gladhill, Urquhart, Elgin (will dated 18 May 1803; proved 17 July 1811). He was buried in Scotland.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.sensato.com/Grant/william_grant.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Important Note:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. <title>[CLAN-GRANT] More Information on Effingham Grant</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-GRANT/2007-10/1193857184</link>
<description> &#x3C;BR&#x3E;As earlier researched, Effingham Grant, was left penniless when his father Captain James Grant of Carron died at the Abby of Holyrood in 1790.  I have found references that he was commissioned a Surgeon 2nd Mate on 8 Feb 1794 in the Inverness-shire Highlanders or 97th Regiment of Foot (1794-1796) based on their history, a copy of which is in the National Library of Scotland.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;On page 33 of the reference, it states &#x22;The two Surgeons-mates, John Grant and Effingham Grant, especially the latter, had attended the sick during the past two auduous months......&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;John Grant is possibly his brother.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Further on Page 61, it states Effingham Grant, 2nd. Mate 8 February 1794; resigned 14th November 1794, Son to Captain James Grant of Carron.  His mother wrote &#x22;Roy's Wife of Aldivalloch&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Still nothing to firmly tie him to Effingham Howard Grant, my GGGGGrandfather, born in Scotland in 1776, married Jane Harrison at St. Marylebone near London and died in Kendal, England in 1841, but it still seems right.  So far, I can find no reference to Effingham Grant after 1794.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Any ideas out there?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sam Grant&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Hi Sam&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;A quick general note. There is a pedigree of the Grants of Carron in a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;History of Antigua (I am afraid I cannot find my photocopy at present), but&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I think it is more extensive in the later generations than that in Fraser's&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Chiefs of Grant.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Perhaps the entry I have pasted below is a letter to the Chief from E H&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Grant rather than E L Grant (as transcribed). If you are going up to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Edinburgh, perhaps you should take a look, as you never know your&#x3C;BR&#x3E;luck...perhaps E H Grant was looking for a commission in the Strathspey&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Fencibles...:&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;National Archives of Scotland&#x3C;BR&#x3E;GD248 Papers of the Ogilvy family, Earls of Seafield (Seafield Papers) c&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1205-1971 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;----------------------------------------------------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----&#x3C;BR&#x3E;CountryCode GB &#x3C;BR&#x3E;RepCode 234 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;RefNo GD248/683/2/2 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Repository National Archives of Scotland &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Title Correspondence of Sir James Grant, mainly on raising the Strathspey&#x3C;BR&#x3E;fencibles &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Date 5-9 Mar 1792 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Description Writers include: EL Grant, Carron; Hugh Grant of Moy; the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Vicomte de Vaux [who addresses Sir James as 'honorable et tres cher&#x3C;BR&#x3E;parent']; William Grant, camp Dum Dum, giving news of JT Grant in India;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;James Grant the factor; Arthur Forbes of Culloden. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;AccessStatus Open &#x3C;BR&#x3E;AccessConditions Some restrictions on access: consult NAS staff &#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you search on www.nas.gov.uk and then go into the OPAC online catalogue,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I would suggest that you search on Grant AND Carron. His brothers/sisters stayed in London; their names&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;were James, Thomas, Jane Lydia, Charles, George, Mary (Alice?), Susan and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Robert. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Effingham Howard Grant was born in Scotland, exactly where unknown, about &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1776. PERHAPS he is the Effingham that is one of the last of the Grants of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Carron that are mentioned in Sir William Fraser's book, Chiefs of Grant,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;written &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in 1883. The Effingham mentioned there left Edinburgh (Abbey of Holyrood &#x3C;BR&#x3E;House) in 1790 apparently penniless when his father, Sir James Grant of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Carron, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;died deeply in debt. Trying to make a connection there or get any further &#x3C;BR&#x3E;information on EHG.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I did confirm that my EHG was born in Scotland about 1776 and probably of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;minor nobility (Esqre). One of the reasons that JFG left England what that&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;he married &#x22;beneath his station.&#x22; Maria Woodham's father was evidently a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;well-to-do brickmaker but a commoner. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here I have pasted the listings from 3 records in Westmorland Church Notes.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kendal (S). died &#x3C;BR&#x3E;18th February 1841 Effingham Howard Grant aged 65, also 26th May 1843 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Jane Grant his wife aged 66, also 29th October 1844 Thomas Grant their son&#x3C;BR&#x3E;aged &#x3C;BR&#x3E;34. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kendal (S). More importantly, I will be in Edinburgh on the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1st and 2nd of August. Can someone give me some guidance as to where I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;should &#x3C;BR&#x3E;look to see if I can make the connection or, perhaps, dispute my theory&#x3C;BR&#x3E;that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;they are one and the same? Are there some contacts that I can establish &#x3C;BR&#x3E;liaison with via email prior to my arrival. One of the reasons that JFG left England what that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;he married &#x22;beneath his station.&#x22; Maria Woodham's father was evidently a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;well-to-do brickmaker but a commoner. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here I have pasted the listings from 3 records in Westmorland Church Notes. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kendal (S). died &#x3C;BR&#x3E;18th February 1841 Effingham Howard Grant aged 65, also 26th May 1843 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Jane Grant his wife aged 66, also 29th October 1844 Thomas Grant their son aged &#x3C;BR&#x3E;34. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kendal (S). In memory of Robert Grant, youngest son of E. H. Grant and Jane &#x3C;BR&#x3E;his wife who died 8th April 1847 aged 23 years. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kendal (S). More importantly, I will be in Edinburgh on the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1st and 2nd of August. Can someone give me some guidance as to where I should &#x3C;BR&#x3E;look to see if I can make the connection or, perhaps, dispute my theory that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;they are one and the same? Are there some contacts that I can establish &#x3C;BR&#x3E;liaison with via email prior to my arrival. <description>Help!&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;I am a descendant of John Francis Grant the son of Effingham Howard &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Grant/Jane Harrison married Jan. 28, 1808 at St. Marylebone, Saint Mary-St. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Marylebone Road, London, England. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;John was born in 1821 and after marrying Maria Woodhams, in 1849 immigrated &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to NY/Michigan in 1855. His brothers/sisters stayed in London; their names &#x3C;BR&#x3E;were James, Thomas, Jane Lydia, Charles, George, Mary (Alice?), Susan and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Robert. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Effingham Howard Grant was born in Scotland, exactly where unknown, about &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1776. PERHAPS he is the Effingham that is one of the last of the Grants of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Carron that are mentioned in Sir William Fraser's book, Chiefs of Grant, written &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in 1883. <title>Re: [CLAN-GRANT] The Gathering 2009 - HUGE Clan gathering in Edinburgh Scotland</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-GRANT/2007-07/1183734130</link>
<description>Keep in mind that while this would be an impressive and memorable event &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to attend, the Clan Grant International Gathering will be held in the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Abernethy Highland Games in Nethybridge, Scotland in 2010. The Clan &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Grant International Gathering is an opportunity held once every 5 years &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to meet with our UK cousins, explore the ancestral lands, and meet our &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Chief.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Rand Allan&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Vice-President, Clan Grant Society US&#x3C;BR&#x3E;rballan@san.rr.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----- Original Message -----&#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: Heather &#x3C;hefyfe@cox.net&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Date: Friday, July 6, 2007 7:33 am&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: [CLAN-GRANT] The Gathering 2009 - HUGE Clan gathering in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Edinburgh Scotland&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: CLAN-GRANT@rootsweb.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; A friend of mine Lord Jamie Sempill sent the following letter out &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; recently, I thought you might want to know about it:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; A celebration of the contribution made by the clans &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; to the culture and history of Scotland.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; The Scottish Executive has chosen 2009 as the Year of the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Homecoming. This initiative is directed worldwide at all those &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; with an affinity to Scotland. There can be no greater affinity &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; than that of the clan member, and a major International Clan &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Gathering is being planned to support this exciting initiative.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; The Gathering will take the form of a major Highland Games, but &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; with the addition of a special clan ceremony, designed by the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; producers of the Edinburgh Tattoo. This will be held on the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; magnificent castle esplanade and will commemorate the contribution &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; made by the clans to the culture and history of Scotland. The &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Gathering is being hosted by the Standing Council of Scottish &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Chiefs, and it is hoped that all clan associations will attend.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; The Gathering 2009 Ltd has opened offices in Edinburgh, and is in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; the early stages of planning and designing the event. <title>[CLAN-GRANT] Roderick GRANT - Sutherland</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CLAN-GRANT/2007-06/1182427354</link>
<description>I am researching the family of Roderick GRANT b abt 1889 at Dornach, Sutherland. He married Elizabeth MacKay July 27, 1820 (Dornach).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;sons: Alexander GRANT b 1824 - CREICH&#x3C;BR&#x3E;          Robert GRANT b1828 - DORNACH&#x3C;BR&#x3E;          Wm GRANT b 1829 - DORNACH&#x3C;BR&#x3E;          Roderick GRANT b 1837 - Ontario, CANADA&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Some time before 1837, This family immigrated to Canada. They settled in Eldon TWP. Many GRANT family graves are in Kirkfield cemetery (Eldon Twp).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Roderick was listed as a Yeoman on the 1851 Canadian census. I am interested in history about Roderick's ancestry and anyone who may be related to the Eldon GRANTs who immigrated.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Michele (Kirkfield, Ontario)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
