<title>Re: [CORNISH] Mineral Point, Wisconsin</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CORNISH/2009-01/1231438607</link>
<description>Sher:&#x3C;BR&#x3E; I can tell you that my William Paynter is in Mineral Point, Wisconsin by &#x3C;BR&#x3E;about 1843 (would have to check records to be absolutely certain on that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;date but that is close). The family immigrates from Cornwall with teenaged kids &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and it is one of the sons who marries a Jacka daughter shortly after in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Mineral Point. I think my Paynter family is probably too old and/or too young to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;be the line that you are tracking. However, I have no idea how common a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;name that Paynter is so I don&#x27;t know about extended relationships. I also know &#x3C;BR&#x3E;that there are two separate Paynter families that come to Mineral Point and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;that they are not, as far as the families know, related to each other. This &#x3C;BR&#x3E;information was provided to me a number of years ago by one of the librarians &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in Mineral Point who was married to a greats grandson of the other line but &#x3C;BR&#x3E;who knew my line as well. Mineral Point is a small town and everyone who has &#x3C;BR&#x3E;been there for any length of time knows each other.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Hope this helps.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Cheers, Julie Paynter Rice&#x3C;BR&#x3E;**************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. <title>[CORNISH] PHILLIPS to Mineral Point, Wisconsin 1840s</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CORNISH/2009-01/1231437163</link>
<description>Hi, Julia and Julie, and other Listers, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Isn&#x27;t this fun!  First, the US Hotel in up on High Street, a 3 story building that has been carefully maintained through the years, though I understand the top floor isn&#x27;t useable now.  The owner of the law office  told me the building had recently been bought by a couple who hope to restore all of it.  The Wisconsin Historical Society and the Mineral Point Historical Society have pictures of it from the past.  I visited it about 1985 and it had a saloon in the bottom and a barber shop!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My HUGH PHILLIPS is the only one of his family that I know of who immigrated.  I have never found any info that leads me to think he had siblings who came across the pond and stayed.  However, his wife&#x27;s (PRISCILLA ELLIS LADNER) sister, JANE ROBERTS LADNER married a JAMES PHILLIPS (son of Matthew?) , from around Redruth  and they, along with two other sisters, HONOR CHENALLS LADNER  and SELINA LADNER, went to British Columbia, Canada in the spring of 1860.  Priscilla, Honor, Jane and Selina&#x27;s brothers,  WILLIAM HENRY LADNER  and THOMAS ELLIS LADNER had come with their dad, EDWARD LADNER and Priscilla in 1851 and gone from Mineral Point to the California Gold Fields and were in Grass Valley for 8 years.  Then they went to the gold fields in British Columbia and settled on the Fraser River, establishing Ladners Landing.  Both of the men were important figures in the development of that area.  JAMES PHILLIPS and JANE as well as HONOR and SELINA settled in the same area in British Columbia.  Only PRISCILLA stayed in Mineral Point, Iowa Co., Wisconsin.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;So, my point in telling all this is that I don&#x27;t know of any PHILLIPS families that went to California.  I would love to learn more about lines that did, in hopes of learning more about my HUGH PHILLIPS.  I know that HUGH had a brother, ROBERT W. PHILLIPS  (I think that is Withiel, his mother&#x27;s maiden name) of  Buckingham Place, 374 Bristol Road,  Edgbaston,  Birmingham,  [is this Warwickshire?]   as I have a copy of a letter he sent to the family in Mineral Point , 1880, on learning of the death of HUGH.    ROBERT  W. and wife MARY PHILLIPS had sons WILLIAM  PLOMER  WITHIEL  GUILLERMO  PHILLIPS (born Falmouth 1851/52,  GEORGE HERBERT  PHILLIPS (b. Falmouth 1853/1854,  FRANK  LESLIE  PHILLIPS  [medical student](Falmouth 1856/57).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In the letter, Robert W. says &#x22;We like, your own family, were eight children and ours was that condition in life whereby most families, (large ones at least) get scattered over the face of the Earth. Some of my brothers &#x26; sisters were &#x3C;BR&#x3E;early married &#x26; left home.  One went to America but afterward returned and settled in Liverpool &#x26; others went elsewhere.  Later on Still one Sister married &#x26;  went to Spain.&#x22; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Well, this may be longer than we are supposed to post here.  I am happy to email copies of three letter I have from the Robert W. Phillips family to the Phillips family in Wisconsin in 1880 to any of you who request it.  I would love to find other researchers with ties to this line.  If a number of you request copies, I will post them here.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Blessings...Meli in Texas&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Is there a knowledgeable historian on the list who could tell me what &#x3C;BR&#x3E;was the criteria for inclusion in, or omission from, the 1569 Muster at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;St Agnes.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In my records I have two males currently identified as brothers, but &#x3C;BR&#x3E;only one is included in this muster.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If only one brother had a weapon (jack and bill) would this exclude the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;other brother?  However, if they were father and son, would age (too old &#x3C;BR&#x3E;or too young) be a reason for omitting one of them?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;John Smith&#x3C;BR&#x3E;OPC Phillack and Hayle&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;	&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[CORNISH] Jennie - Butte</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CORNISH/2009-01/1231383654</link>
<description>We have been through Butte, Montana, USA several times on our sojourns &#x27;down &#x3C;BR&#x3E;south&#x27; , especially during winter weather to reach warmer places in Arizona &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and California in the Mojave Desert.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;We usually pass through Butte, sometimes stopping for lunch on our way &#x3C;BR&#x3E;through the mountains. We did stay there one night and I was able to see the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;stunning cross up on a mountain overlooking Butte which is flood-lit at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;night in memory of miners who have died there.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;It is a mining town settled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. You will be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;able to get details on Google.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Anaconda copper mine is not far from Butte. It is somewhat shocking to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;look down into the great bowl of diggings with its  massive machinery from &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the road. Again, see Google for details.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My connection with Butte was through a forebear who went there from Cornwall &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with his young wife. He hated the severe winter weather and the &#x27;lifestyle&#x27; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;of that time in that place. Butte was a wide open town back then with bars &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and other kinds of night life which did not suit him, a staunch Methodist.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;When his young wife died he took his two sons back across the United States &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and across the Atlantic Ocean to Polgooth, Cornwall a vast journey in those &#x3C;BR&#x3E;days. While in Conwall he met and married a Cornish girl (wouldn&#x27;t have any &#x3C;BR&#x3E;other according to family lore) and then returned to the USA, but not to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Butte.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;He settled in New Jersey with his 2nd wife.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Lorna who is no longer lounging or longing.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Let me know if I can help further.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Julie:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This particular posting may have found another link - My Sarah Branton &#x3C;BR&#x3E;married a William Paynter in 1836 in North Petherwin and a son  William was &#x3C;BR&#x3E;born to them in 1840 at North Petherwin.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Do you think this might be the same William Paynter?????  I can find &#x3C;BR&#x3E;nothing further of them in Cornwall or Devon except for a possible death of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sarah Paynter on the IGI in 1894 - not proven of course.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;What do you think??&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sher&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Ontario, Canada&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;At 03:20 PM 07/01/2009 -0500, you wrote:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Meli:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;     I think we may be related.  My Mineral Point  line that connects to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Julia&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;is the Toay-Jacka line who marry into the William  Paynter line in Mineral&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Point early in the 1840s or so (have to check my  notes).  On the other &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;side, I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;have a Sarah (Jane?) Phillips marrying John  Perry (possibly in California&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;where it looks like some of the Phillips line went  for the gold rush from &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Iowa&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;County) and coming back to the Linden area.   Their daughter, Sarah Jane &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Perry&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;married my great-grandfather Charles Murray  Paynter (his first wife), a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;miner&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;in Mineral Point.  The names of Sarah,  Jane, and Perry continue on down&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;through the family.  There is a large  stone building at the downtown end &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;of Shake&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Rag Street in Mineral Point with a  sign saying it is the &#x22;Phillips house&#x22;.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;Is this the hotel you are talking  about?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;     A number of years ago I had contact with Phillips  relations in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;California so at least a part of the family stayed on after the  gold rush &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;and are&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;living there still.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;     I&#x27;m having a tough time making the connections back  from Mineral Point&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;to the various lines in Cornwall.  Leads would be  helpful as I am trying &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;to do&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;some research on Cornwall as well so I can  understand the family mining&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;history (I am a geologist by training). It was the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;standard word for a widow for a long time.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;What is extraordinary is that married women had no first names in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;public beyond the bosom of their own families, and in the early &#x3C;BR&#x3E;nineteenth century, even her own home, a wife would be addressed by her &#x3C;BR&#x3E;husband as &#x22;Mrs. X&#x22; in the presence of the children, though no doubt &#x3C;BR&#x3E;she got her given name back when she and her husband went to bed . . .  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;In these more informal days we just can&#x27;t see into that mindset.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Meli:&#x3C;BR&#x3E; I think we may be related. My Mineral Point line that connects to Julia &#x3C;BR&#x3E;is the Toay-Jacka line who marry into the William Paynter line in Mineral &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Point early in the 1840s or so (have to check my notes). On the other side, I &#x3C;BR&#x3E;have a Sarah (Jane?) Phillips marrying John Perry (possibly in California &#x3C;BR&#x3E;where it looks like some of the Phillips line went for the gold rush from Iowa &#x3C;BR&#x3E;County) and coming back to the Linden area. Their daughter, Sarah Jane Perry &#x3C;BR&#x3E;married my great-grandfather Charles Murray Paynter (his first wife), a miner &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in Mineral Point. The names of Sarah, Jane, and Perry continue on down &#x3C;BR&#x3E;through the family. There is a large stone building at the downtown end of Shake &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Rag Street in Mineral Point with a sign saying it is the &#x22;Phillips house&#x22;. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Is this the hotel you are talking about? &#x3C;BR&#x3E; A number of years ago I had contact with Phillips relations in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;California so at least a part of the family stayed on after the gold rush and are &#x3C;BR&#x3E;living there still.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; I&#x27;m having a tough time making the connections back from Mineral Point &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to the various lines in Cornwall. Leads would be helpful as I am trying to do &#x3C;BR&#x3E;some research on Cornwall as well so I can understand the family mining &#x3C;BR&#x3E;history (I am a geologist by training). Thanks.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Julie Paynter Rice&#x3C;BR&#x3E;**************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making &#x3C;BR&#x3E;headlines. <description>Many thanks to Julia Hanneman-Schoenbach for the wonderful information on &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Mineral Point. My gggrandfather, HUGH PHILLIPS from Illogan (born 03 Nov &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1812), arrived, first in Grant Co., Pigeon Diggings in1842. He arrived on &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the ship HANOVER into New Orleans. Were John Toay and Phillip Allen on the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;same ship?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hugh returned to Cornwall after declaring his intent to apply for US &#x3C;BR&#x3E;citizenship in 1844, gathered up his wife, ELIZABETH DONNITHORNE and 5 year &#x3C;BR&#x3E;old daughter, MARY ELIZABETH PHILLIPS and returned to America. They arrived &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in New Orleans on the ship WINDSOR CASTLE on 21 April 1846. They went to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Pigeon Diggings but moved sometime prior to 1850 to Mineral Point, as they &#x3C;BR&#x3E;were enumerated there in the 1850 US census.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;HUGH PHILLIPS built the United States Hotel in Mineral Point. (or had it &#x3C;BR&#x3E;built) He had been a miner in Cornwall and Devon, so don&#x27;t believe he was a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;stone mason. But I am wondering if TOAY and ALLEN built it. The US &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hotel was a downstairs mercantile establishment in the early 1850s and Hugh &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and his family lived upstairs. He converted it to a hotel in 1856, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;according to editorial comments from the newspapers of the time. Currently &#x3C;BR&#x3E;it houses a law office.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;His parents were WILLIAM PHILLIPS and ELIZABETH WITHIEL who married in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Perranzabuloe in 1809. I would love to share info with others who have an &#x3C;BR&#x3E;interest in PHILLIPS, DONNITHORNE, WITHIEL, and LADNER from the area. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hugh&#x27;s second wife was PRISCILLA ELLIS LADNER, daughter of EDWARD LADNER &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and SARAH ELLIS of St. Levan.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Blessings.....
