<title>[NCHAYWOO] 2007 NATIONAL ALLISON FAMILY REUNION</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NCHAYWOO/2007-07/1183991443</link>
<description> The huge National Allison Family Reunion returns to Brevard on the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;weekend of October 20. The National Allison Family Reunion is an annual&#x3C;BR&#x3E;event produced by the 700 members of the National Allison-Allanson Family&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Association.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; The guest of honor and speaker for 2007 is Her Majesty&#x27;s Deputy Consul&#x3C;BR&#x3E;General Helen Arbon, a distinguished British diplomat formally representing&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the Allison ancestral homeland.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; 2007 kicks off a year long celebration of heritage with heavy emphasis&#x3C;BR&#x3E;on education, leading up to the 2008 National Allison Family Reunion marking&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the 350th anniversary of the family&#x27;s departure from London and arrival in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;America in 1658.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; New for 2007 will be a special historical exhibit entitled &#x22;One Family -&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Five Centuries.&#x22; The 100 foot long walk-by heritage exhibit flows through&#x3C;BR&#x3E;time from the year 1500 to the present moment, chronologically interpreting&#x3C;BR&#x3E;500 years in the life of a single family as it evolves from the civility of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;life in London&#x27;s powerful merchant class, to life in colonial Maryland, and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;on to life as a culturally and racially diverse American pioneer family&#x3C;BR&#x3E;established in the backwoods of the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;western North Carolina, as well as other areas of the country.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; An exciting line-up of specially selected heritage entertainment will&#x3C;BR&#x3E;also take the Allisons through time, beginning with classic British&#x3C;BR&#x3E;selections performed by the Pyramid Brass Quintet. Talented Atlanta vocalist&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Allison Melton will also perform several traditional British selections,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;including &#x22;God Save the Queen&#x22; and &#x22;The White Cliffs of Dover.&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E; American heritage entertainment will be presented by a host of bands and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;entertainers, including the Celestial Mountain String Band, the McDowell&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Family Band, Tugalo Holler, the Melodyaires, and former world champion&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Indian hoop dancer Eddie Swimmer of Cherokee.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Festivities kick off with a welcome party at the Elk&#x27;s Club on Friday,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;October 19. Friday evening includes dinner, dancing, and a family history&#x3C;BR&#x3E;swap-shop area in an adjoining area.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; The event packed weekend continues all day on Saturday on campus at&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Brevard College, opening early that morning at 8:00 am for viewing the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;special heritage exhibit. The annual reunion program and banquet follows at&#x3C;BR&#x3E;10:00 am.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; The traditional reunion memorial service will immediately follow the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;noon luncheon banquet, with Her Majesty&#x27;s Deputy Consul General Arbon&#x3C;BR&#x3E;presenting the 2007 memorial wreath in tribute to the Allisons British&#x3C;BR&#x3E;ancestors. The beautiful English &#x22;Allison rose&#x22; will make up the memorial&#x3C;BR&#x3E;wreath.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; The daytime festivities at Brevard College also include the annual&#x3C;BR&#x3E;reunion auction with many original pieces, including quilts, original art,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and beautifully framed original photographs of Allison historic sites in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;England and America, hand-made musical instruments, and a long list of items&#x3C;BR&#x3E;not yet complete.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; The reunion raffle for 2007 features a special hand-made heritage quilt,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and an exquisite hand-made Allison violin crafted by master instrument make&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Ed Allison of Travelers Rest, South Carolina.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; After an afternoon break, the evening events turn casual and down-home&#x3C;BR&#x3E;for an old-fashioned fall family fun night with dancing, singing, and a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;barbeque dinner. Following events on campus on Saturday evening, the crowd&#x3C;BR&#x3E;will gather for a late night bluegrass music party at Rockefellas at Rodeway&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Inn.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; For 2007, the event packed Allison reunion weekend coincides with the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;community-wide Transylvania Heritage Day celebration on Sunday, October 21&#x3C;BR&#x3E;at the historic 1815 Allison-Deaver House. Heritage Day will allow the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;reunion crowd to see the family&#x27;s oldest surviving home in America brought&#x3C;BR&#x3E;to life like never before through living history demonstrators and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;interpreters, and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;excellent heritage entertainment from the stage on the front lawn. Docents&#x3C;BR&#x3E;in period dress will lead the crowd on tours of the historic structure,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;while the surrounding grounds of the home will be filled with the past,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;including Civil War era reenactors and demonstrators in the pasture, an&#x3C;BR&#x3E;exhibit of historic Transylvania quilts, and an exhibit of the famed locally&#x3C;BR&#x3E;made Gillespie rifles.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; All Allisons and kin cordially invited. Due to catered meals,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;reservations are required for most events. Please call or e-mail immediately&#x3C;BR&#x3E;for more information, including a schedule of events and how to make&#x3C;BR&#x3E;reservations closer to date.
