My grandmother and her brother were adopted sometime before 12 May 1909, determined by a Bible given to her on that date of her baptism and birthday with her adopted parents. She was 6 years old on that day. Her brother would have been 4 years old in April of 1909. Grandma said that she knew that William Elliott "Bill" REED was her real brother and that she was very protective of him. Her name was Helen Schuyler REED. REED was their adoptive surname. She and her brother passed away never knowing their true surname or birth parents names; so of course we have a big empty side of our family tree. Anyhow, I have been chasing after finding out about her first 5 or 6 years for over 30 years and I have always come up short. My grandmother stated that back in those days no one talked about adoption. There was a drawer in the diningroom sideboard (where she was not sappose to look) that contained a paper that had across the top of it "The Children's Home of Philadelphia" which I have not been able to match up with her. The Presbyterian Home in Philadelphia at that time fit but turned out with no results. Not having a birth surname really makes this hard. This list, at one time, was discussing Philadelphia Directories online. I did a search for the surname SCHUYLER believing that perhaps my grandmother's middle name could have been her surname before adoption. I found a SCHUYLER family with a William. This family appeared to be in the burial business and other well known Philadelphia businesses. But again it lead me no where. Anyhow, when I saw your post concerning Eleanor F. WILLARD, adopted about 1908, I thought perhaps she may have been in the same home with my grandmother and her brother. I also wonder if they had any other brothers or sisters. Back then having a child about every two years was about the norm, so there was room for their parents to have more children before they turned up for adoption. Willard might have been adopted out, in 1907 or 1908...DO NOT know what orphanage...but...i THINK i found her residing with a Suzanne Wharton...in 1910 and with the Whartons in 1920.
