<title>[PA-PHILA-MOUNT-MORIAH-CEMETERY] Eleanor F. WILLARD Adoption circa: 1907-1908</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/PA-PHILA-MOUNT-MORIAH-CEMETERY/2009-01/1231032196</link>
<description>Sandy,&#x3C;BR&#x3E; I am sad to say that I can not help you.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; My grandmother and her brother were adopted sometime before 12 May 1909, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;determined by a Bible given to her on that date of her baptism and birthday &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with her adopted parents. She was 6 years old on that day. Her brother would &#x3C;BR&#x3E;have been 4 years old in April of 1909.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Grandma said that she knew that William Elliott &#x22;Bill&#x22; REED was her real &#x3C;BR&#x3E;brother and that she was very protective of him.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Her name was Helen Schuyler REED. REED was their adoptive surname. She &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and her brother passed away never knowing their true surname or birth parents &#x3C;BR&#x3E;names; so of course we have a big empty side of our family tree.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Anyhow, I have been chasing after finding out about her first 5 or 6 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;years for over 30 years and I have always come up short.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; My grandmother stated that back in those days no one talked about &#x3C;BR&#x3E;adoption. There was a drawer in the diningroom sideboard (where she was not sappose &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to look) that contained a paper that had across the top of it &#x22;The &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Children&#x27;s Home of Philadelphia&#x22; which I have not been able to match up with her. The &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Presbyterian Home in Philadelphia at that time fit but turned out with no &#x3C;BR&#x3E;results.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Not having a birth surname really makes this hard. &#x3C;BR&#x3E; This list, at one time, was discussing Philadelphia Directories online. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;I did a search for the surname SCHUYLER believing that perhaps my &#x3C;BR&#x3E;grandmother&#x27;s middle name could have been her surname before adoption. I found a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;SCHUYLER family with a William. This family appeared to be in the burial business &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and other well known Philadelphia businesses. But again it lead me no where.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; Anyhow, when I saw your post concerning Eleanor F. WILLARD, adopted &#x3C;BR&#x3E;about 1908, I thought perhaps she may have been in the same home with my &#x3C;BR&#x3E;grandmother and her brother.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; I also wonder if they had any other brothers or sisters. Back then &#x3C;BR&#x3E;having a child about every two years was about the norm, so there was room for &#x3C;BR&#x3E;their parents to have more children before they turned up for adoption.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Best of luck to you, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Chocy&#x3C;BR&#x3E;PS: It just occurred to me that it will be 100 years since Grandma recieved &#x3C;BR&#x3E;that Bible on 12 May 2009!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;**************New year...new news. <description>hi chocy,&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;I believe Eleanor F. Willard might have been adopted out, in 1907 or &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1908...DO NOT know what orphanage...but...i THINK i found her residing with a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Suzanne Wharton...in 1910 and with the Whartons in 1920. This is all &#x3C;BR&#x3E;speculated....not sure if this is MY Eleanor or not...but the bottom line is......I want &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to find adoption records, marriage and/or death certificate...&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;thanks for any input...&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;sandy day...&#x3C;BR&#x3E;**************New year...new news.
