Hi
In the book "Where to Go and Place Names of Centre Co. Pa" by Paul M. Dubbs
1961

"P. 109 Potters Mills

Potters's Mills, northern entrance to the Seven Mountains at the
intersection of Rts. 322 and 53, has been an important Centre Co. community since very
early times

In 1788 Gen. James Potter built the first log house, which long was used as
a tavern. When Rt. 322 was built some years ago, it passed over the
foundation of the log building.

In 1824 J. and J. Potter built a brick hotel nearby when the old log
building went out of business. The new structure with many additions and
improvements in subsequent years, is the present day Eutaw House.

Gen. Potter built the first mill and sawmill in 1788 - 89 and when he died
in the latter year, the property passed into the hands of his son, afterwards
Judge James Potter, who opened the first store in 1790 and in 1813 built a
stone grist mill which was destroyed by fire about 1870.

In 1883 J. and J. Potter and S. R. Patton erected "POTTERS'S WOOLEN MILL"
which burned down in March, 1939. It was rebuilt the following year.

Today, none of the old mills stand, although some traces of them can be seen
in a field at the lower end of the village across from what formerly was the
town school.

The Potters Mills of today consists of about 35 homes, several trailers, a
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and several stores and service stations. The
Eutaw House is the dominant building and the chief business activity in the
community."

There is a drawing of the Potter Township map with Potters Mills and Potters
Bank just below Sprucetown.

Hope this helps!
Jean Corio
Tampa, FL - researching Hughs/Hughes, Hicks, Lamborn, Simpson, Westbrook,
Dougherty/Daugherty and Nearhood in Centre Co.
[PACENTRE] FW: Conservancy to preserve Leibhart Site

In our nearly 28 year history we have helped preserve sites in over 39 sites, several of which have gone on to become state and national parks. We currenlty have 10 preserves in Pennsylvania and work closely with the PHMC. Anyone interested in learning more about the Conservancy should visit our website at www.americanarchaeology.org<http://www.americanarchaeology.org/>.

The Archaeological Conservancy has signed an option to purchase the Upper, or Oscar Leibhart site from Grove Enterprises. The 12 acre site was appraised at $460,000 and the owners are doing a bargain sale to the Conservancy for $410,000. The Archaeological Conservancy is partnering with the Farm & Natural Lands Trust of York County & the Lancaster-York Heritage Region to raise the necessary funds for this project. While these 2 local non-profits are involved in several land acquisition projects in York, Co., THE PRESERVATION OF THIS SITE HAS ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PRESERVATION OF THE BYRD LEIBHART SITE AND DOES NOT INVOLVE ANY COUNTY FUNDING.

Of the $410,000 needed to acquire the Upper liebhart site; the Conservancy, Farm & Natural Lands Trust & Lancaster-York Heritage Region were awarded a PA Department of Environmental Protection Conservation Grant that covers $310,000. The Archaeological Conservancy is required to raise the remaining $100,000 and has until Dec. 1st to do so. To date, the Conservancy has already invested thousands of dollars in this project in obtaining appraisals, survey, subdivision approvals, option funds, etc. As the point person for this project, and the person responsible for all of the negotiations and expenses so far, I can assure you that this is VERY legitimate. If anyone has any doubts or other questions I would ask that they please contact me directly at the number below.

If this site is not acquired at this time it will remain in private ownership and will not be protected from possible destruction. It could be used for up to 3 buildable lots. If the Conservancy is able to raise the funds the site will be managed as a permanent, open space, archaeological research preserve. Any and all contributions are welcome and thank you for your efforts.

Best Regards,
Andy Stout
Eastern Regional Director
The Archaeological Conservancy
Eastern Regional Office
8 East 2nd St, Suite 200
Frederick, MD 21701
(ph) 301.682.6359
(cell) 240.285.2617
(fax) 301.682.7073
www.americanarchaeology.org<http://www.americanarchaeology.org/>

In response to Renee Waring's concern about the information on the Upper Leibhart Site.

The Archaeological Conservancy is a legitimate non-profit organization dedicated to preserving archaeological sites. I have known of this society and its efforts for years. It is NOT some fly-by-night organization trying to take people's money. The article from which I got the information on this site was published on the Archaeological Conservancy's website and in their magazine.
Perhaps there is confusion by the fact that there are TWO sites near each other both named Leibhart, the Oscar Leibhart Site (site number 36YO9) and the Byrd Leibhart Site (site number 36YO170). BOTH sites have already been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, both are currently privately owned and both are threatened by development. I believe York County is preserving one and the Archaeological Conservancy is trying to preserve the other.
Please pass this information on to Ms. Waring and your readers, so that they will not be discouraged from supporting this worthy effort.

Melissa Diamanti
Archaeological & Historical Consultants, Inc.
melidiamanti@gmail.com

In a message dated 11/13/2008 3:47:10 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, jkhouser84@gmail.com writes:

2. UPPER LEIBHART SITE

Please help rescue this site in York County, PA. It is believed to be one of the last major villages inhabited by the Susquehannocks prior to their defeat by the Iroquois around 1675. In addition to remains from that occupation, the site has earlier occupations from the Early and Middle Woodland period. Portions of the site have been studied by the PA State Museum and the PHMC. The site is threatened by residential development. But the *Archaeological Conservancy* has a 6-month option to purchase the site and is partnering with the Lancaster-York Heritage Region, the Farm and Natual Lands Trust of York County, and the PA DCNR. The Conservancy would contribute $100,000 and would manage the site as a permanent research preserve. To do this, *the conservancey needs to raise $100,000 by December 1, 2008*.

If you can help, please send a contribution to:

The Archaeological Conservancy,

Attn: Upper Leibhart,

5301 Central Ave. NE, Suite 902

Albuquerque, NM 87108-1517.

> Everyone,
>
> This property has already been preserved by the County of York. We are paying the developer millions for it. I don't know why or where this article above came from but I would not trust it.
>
Renee L. Waring
York County, PA
