<title>[TNCLAIBO] Union County Faces-- Hurst, Sharp, Miller-- Union County Cannon</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TNCLAIBO/2009-01/1231374625</link>
<description>&#x3E;From Union County Faces of War by Peters/ McDonald &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Pages 30 &#x26; 31&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Union County Cannon&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#xA0;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;An old cannon, forged about 172 years ago to be fired in celebration of Andrew Jackson&#x27;s election to the United States Presidency, is historically linked to two East TN families.&#xA0; Two Union County landowners and iron masters, Peter Sharp (1794-1878) and his son-in-law Major Allen Hurst (1810-1873), are responsible for forging the cannon.&#xA0; Allen Hurst owned the Allen Hurst Furnace and Peter Sharp owned the Green Grove Furnace, established in 1825.&#xA0; The furnace is known as the Peter Sharp Furnace, located about a quarter of a mile above the mouth of Fall Creek in Union County.&#xA0; Both Sharp and Hurst aided the confederacy during the Civil War, even though the majority of Union county people sympathized with the federal government.&#xA0; The period during and after&#xA0; the war meant that both Sharp and Hurst would lose most of their property along with belongings pertinent to history.&#xA0; And so it was with the cannon.&#xA0; Family history claims that when the cannon&#x3C;BR&#x3E; was fired during the Andrew Jackson celebration, it exploded; sending pieces of iron hurling in all directions.&#xA0; Soft spots, cracks or improper amounts of gun powder were suspected causes of the explosion.&#xA0; Today, remnants of this historical cannon are in the possession of Mrs. Jessie Lee Russell Seals, left to her by her aunt, Ola Miller of Union County in 1957.&#xA0; It had originally been abandoned in the home of John and Arminta Hurst Miller, Mrs. Seals&#x27; grandparents.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;      &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
