Michael,

I couldn't find J.W. in the ancestry.index under the name Siposs or Sellers,
but I got a clear image and J.W. is living alone.

The name looks like it is written with the letter "f" in front of the double
consonants as was
common in that time frame, but I can't say for certain that the name is
Sellers. It looks like
the following:

J.W. Sifsofs, 27, Jeweller, value of real estate: $1000, value of
personal estate: $10,000,
born VA

Do you know what the occupation of your J.W. SELLERS was?

Marilyn

---------------original message----------------
In a message dated 7/20/2008 8:07:36 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
muckham11@yahoo.com writes:

I'd like to request a lookup for the 1860 Census in Albemarle County. The
name is indexed as "J.W. Siposs, age 27" and is on Series: M653, Roll: 1331,
Page: 359.

I have been looking for "John Wiklif Sellers" forever and a day, and I came
across the abovementioned census page listing a J.W. Siposs, age 27.
However, in trying to see if "Siposs" was instead "Sellers", I can't find "Siposs"
anywhere on the page. The bottom of the page either is in horrendous shape or
it was photocopied poorly. I viewed it through HQ. If anyone has access to
Ancestry.com or some other source that can view the page, find this "J.W.
Siposs" and can decipher who is in the household I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Michael Sellers

**************Get fantasy football with free live scoring.
I'd like to request a lookup for the 1860 Census in Albemarle County. The name is indexed as "J.W. Siposs, age 27" and is on Series: M653, Roll: 1331, Page: 359.

I have been looking for "John Wiklif Sellers" forever and a day, and I came across the abovementioned census page listing a J.W. Siposs, age 27. However, in trying to see if "Siposs" was instead "Sellers", I can't find "Siposs" anywhere on the page. The bottom of the page either is in horrendous shape or it was photocopied poorly. I viewed it through HQ. If anyone has access to Ancestry.com or some other source that can view the page, find this "J.W. Siposs" and can decipher who is in the household I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Michael Sellers

Were you under
> the
> impression that this was Porter/Parker FINKS?
>
> I found Parker FINKS in 1870 with wife Martha living in Madison Co. He's
> indexed as Porter, but after looking at two different images for the
> page, I
> think the name is definitely Parker.
>
> Source Citation: Year: 1870
> Census Place: Rapidan, Madison, Virginia
> Roll: M593_1662; Page: 72
> Name: Porter Finks
> Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849
> Age in 1870: 21
> Birthplace: Virginia
> Home in 1870: Rapidan, Madison, Virginia
> Race: Black
> Gender: Male
> Post Office:Madison Court House
>
> Porter / Parker Finks, 21, Farm Hand, VA
> Martha Finks, 23, VA
> James Finks, 6, VA
> Maria F Finks, 5/12, VA
>
> Just out of curiosity, I searched the 1860 slave schedule for any slave
> owner named MARTON, to see who might have owned Porter MARTON that was
> living
> with Mark FINKS in the 1870 census and there were 7 results:
>
> R. FINKS, is the son of the 41 yr. old
> M.F. FINKS and wife, S.W. FINKS that are in the 1860 index. living
> in Greene
> County. Lewis FINKS might be the father of that 41 yr. old Mark F. FINKS
> ?
> The value of the personal estate of Lewis FINKS would indicate that he
> owns
> slaves and the fact that the 22 yr. old Mark FINKS is listed as Overseer
> also
> indicates that....... but why isn't he listed in the 1860 Slave
> Schedule? I
> said in my previous email, the only FINK / FINKS slave owner in Madison
> County is listed as Frances E. FINKS.
>
> Okay......here's something......the 1850 Slave Schedule definitely shows a
> Lewis FINKS of Madison County as the owner of 17 slaves but both of the
> newborns are female:
>
> 50 Male Black, Lewis Finks Madison, Virginia
> 45 Female Black
> 29 Female Black
> 27 Male Black
> 26 Male Black
> 24 Female Black
> 23 Female Black
> 21 Female Black
> 16 Male Black
> 11 Male Black
> 10 Male Black
> 6 Male Black
> 4 Male Black
> 3 Female Black
> 2 Male Black
> 0 Female Mulatto
> 0 Female Black
>
> If Lewis FINKS was still owning slaves in 1860, he's not listed on the
> Slave Schedule, so maybe he was missed by the enumerator
> ?????...........ooops!
> wait a minute.....I think I've got it !! Doing a search for any slave
> owner
> named Lewis, living in Madison Co. in 1860, I find a Lewis MILLER and a
> LEWIS TRINKS !!! I think Lewis TRINKS may be Lewis FINKS and the index
> transcriber misspelled the name or mis-read the original record !!! Depending on how the enumerator wrote his
> capital "F" in FINKS, it could look like "TR" !! As you can see,
> there's no
> 10 yr. old male in the list but there is an 11 yr. old male. I think that
> Parker FINKS was owned by either Mark FINKS or Lewis FINKS.
>
> What do you think?
This find of TRINKS is a bit o genius! Good find. I don't doubt
you've got it. And the 11 year old would be Parker. He was
born in 1849, I believe. So he was the slave of Lewis, right?

Lewis was the father of Mark Franklin FINKS, born 1838. Now
I doubt very much that Mark ever owned Parker. He could have
in 1860, but I doubt it - just the overseer, methinks.

Vince

On 7/15/08, Tribehunter@aol.com <Tribehunter@aol.com> wrote:
>
> Hi Vince,
>
> I'm a little confused......the fellow I show with Mark FINKS in the 1870
> census that is 15 yrs. old, is Porter MARTON -- not FINKS. Were you under
> the
> impression that this was Porter/Parker FINKS?
>
> I found Parker FINKS in 1870 with wife Martha living in Madison Co. He's
> indexed as Porter, but after looking at two different images for the
> page, I
> think the name is definitely Parker.
>
> Source Citation: Year: 1870
> Census Place: Rapidan, Madison, Virginia
> Roll: M593_1662; Page: 72
> Name: Porter Finks
> Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849
> Age in 1870: 21
> Birthplace: Virginia
> Home in 1870: Rapidan, Madison, Virginia
> Race: Black
> Gender: Male
> Post Office:Madison Court House
>
> Porter / Parker Finks, 21, Farm Hand, VA
> Martha Finks, 23, VA
> James Finks, 6, VA
> Maria F Finks, 5/12, VA
>
> Just out of curiosity, I searched the 1860 slave schedule for any slave
> owner named MARTON, to see who might have owned Porter MARTON that was
> living
> with Mark FINKS in the 1870 census and there were 7 results:
>
> R. Doing a search for any slave
> owner
> named Lewis, living in Madison Co. in 1860, I find a Lewis MILLER and a
> LEWIS TRINKS !!! Depending on how the enumerator wrote his
> capital "F" in FINKS, it could look like "TR" !! As you can see,
> there's no
> 10 yr. old male in the list but there is an 11 yr. old male.
