<title>[VAUGHN] Creating a Gedcom</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/VAUGHN/2008-08/1219517621</link>
<description>I have had a few members ask me what a gedcom is so thought it best to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;explain.  I am NOT the best at explaining so please bear with me!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;A gedcom is a Genealogical Exchange Data COMmunication or also know as a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;GEnealogical Data COMmunication.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Your genealogy program should offer this tool. If you would like to try&#x3C;BR&#x3E;an excelent genealogical program which offers gedcom capabilities, visit&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.bkwin.htm  This is the link for Brother&#x27;s Keeper Genealogical&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Program and I, personally, think it is the best ever written.  It id&#x3C;BR&#x3E;downloadable in a &#x22;ShareWare&#x22; version which is FREE.  It does NOT have a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;trial time so once you get your info cataloged it doesn&#x27;t lock you out&#x3C;BR&#x3E;of the program.  It is a very simple, reliable, and thorough program.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I&#x27;ve used BK for approximately 18 years.  In that time I have tried MANY&#x3C;BR&#x3E;other programs but I&#x27;ve always ended up back with BK!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Back to How to create a gedcom!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;What a gedcom does is take your preselected information from your&#x3C;BR&#x3E;genealogy program and compress it into a file which is recognizable to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x22;other&#x22; genelogy programs.  Once the file is constructed and compressed&#x3C;BR&#x3E;you can send it to another researcher in the ged format where your&#x3C;BR&#x3E;information can be imported into the other person&#x27;s program.  Be sure&#x3C;BR&#x3E;when you export your gedcom file that you select    GED      as the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;extention!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The imported gedcom is generally 90% or more, readable.  The percentage&#x3C;BR&#x3E;depends strictly on the compatablity of the two programs.  On occasion,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;some of the fields (resources for example) might be listed differently&#x3C;BR&#x3E;in simi-compatable programs and that drops the percentage of readability.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I just uploaded a file to the RESOURCE Page that explains the process of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;creating a gedcom for 26? different genealogy programs.  The address is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.vaughan-vaughn.org/create-gedcom.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you don&#x27;t see your particular manufacturer listed, try the &#x22;generic&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;ged creation instructions.  If that fails, contact me and I will help as&#x3C;BR&#x3E;much as possible.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you have any other questions, please drop me an e-mail.  I am more&#x3C;BR&#x3E;than happy to help.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Best of luck,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Linda&#x3C;BR&#x3E;PS!! Again, I would like to suggest, when naming your gedcom, consider&#x3C;BR&#x3E;using your e-mail address for the name of the file!!  Using your&#x3C;BR&#x3E;address will eleviate submitting a gedcom with the same name (ie Vaughan&#x3C;BR&#x3E;or Vaughn!) thus minimizing any confusion as to the submitter!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>The Reunion Page has been updated with a lot more information!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;You can visit the site by going to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.vaughan-vaughn.org/reunionpage.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I have included a registration form for anyone interested in attending.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.vaughan-vaughn.org/registration.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Please fill it out and return it to me as soon as possible so we can &#x3C;BR&#x3E;continue with the reunion arrangements.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Susan Haddock has volunteered to help with reunion plans.  If you plan &#x3C;BR&#x3E;on attending the reunion, please send both Susan svhadd@aol.com and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;myself LWelden@lightspeed.net  a message letting us know that your are &#x3C;BR&#x3E;planning on attending!  I have had quite a folks already get in touch &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with me and I&#x27;ve given them to Susan so she can help me keep everyone &#x3C;BR&#x3E;updated as to the reunion plans. THANKS SUSAN!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If anyone else wishes to volunteer some help, just let me know!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;For all you folks that have considered doing the DNA testing - Family &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Tree DNA has discounted their test price for a limited time.  The 37 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;strand test is now $119.00 - that&#x27;s a pretty good bargin! If you would &#x3C;BR&#x3E;like to sign up for the testing, click on the link below.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=L27904&#x26;special=true&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Vaughan Vaughn Database now consists of 50,000 names.  I would like &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to encourage everyone to submit a gedcom file to me ASAP.  I am hoping &#x3C;BR&#x3E;to have the database updated and busting with names and resources, by &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the time this reunion comes around.  We should be making a lot more &#x3C;BR&#x3E;connections in no time!!!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you wish to submit a gedcom, just send it to me!  I would like to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;suggest that anyone submitting a gedcom, consider using your e-mail &#x3C;BR&#x3E;address as the file name.  If you name your file this way, there is NO &#x3C;BR&#x3E;confusion as to whom the file was received from.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks and good luck!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Linda&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
