These southerners had traveled hundreds of miles and simply wanted to return to action around Richmond. On July 19th a series of sharp skirmishings erupt at Berryville. Confederates engage the northern cavalrymen at a number of loca- tions which were very fierce for most of the day. The day leaves a number of soldiers injured and killed on both sides. After enduring the northern attacks all afternoon, General Early makes a decision to move his southern cavalrymen to Strasburg in Frederick County. Their western movement took them a lot further from Washington, but it was not the nearest route to Petersburg, where General Lee was awaiting news of their campaign. ARCHAEOLOGY joined Bush and his crew in 2002 as they headed into the field to excavate barracks that once housed Confederate POWs. We returned to Johnson's Island in 2006 and 2007 to follow investigations of the prison hospital, where work continues in 2008. Gradually they see southern reinforcements arriving to support their efforts. All of the federal assaults have been met with stiff resistance. At 2:00 in the afternoon they were making some progress, but the cost was extremely costly. In a 30 minute period one regiment is listed as having lost 632 of their 900 soldiers engaged. As the fighting around Petersburg comes to an end with darkness, General Grant studies the situation, and begins choosing another course of action. During the first days of action at Petersburg, the federals have lost 1688 killed, 8513 wounded, and 1185 which had been captured and missing. The figures represent some 11,386 soldiers out of 63,797 engaged. Should anyone have an ancestor which served during this battle, you are invited to share their rank and their servie records.
