<title>[VAWBTSVETS] SKIRMISHINGS AROUND BERRYVILLE 7-19-1864</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/VAWBTSVETS/2008-07/1216504286</link>
<description>On the 19th of July in 1864, the federal cavalry force which had&#x3C;BR&#x3E;been pursuing Confederate Cavalry General Early finally catch up&#x3C;BR&#x3E;with them at Berryville. These southerners had traveled hundreds&#x3C;BR&#x3E;of miles and simply wanted to return to action around Richmond.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;On July 19th a series of sharp skirmishings erupt at Berryville.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Confederates engage the northern cavalrymen at a number of loca-&#x3C;BR&#x3E;tions which were very fierce for most of the day. The day leaves&#x3C;BR&#x3E;a number of soldiers injured and killed on both sides.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;After enduring the northern attacks all afternoon, General Early&#x3C;BR&#x3E;makes a decision to move his southern cavalrymen to Strasburg in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Frederick County. Their western movement took them a lot further&#x3C;BR&#x3E;from Washington, but it was not the nearest route to Petersburg,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;where General Lee was awaiting news of their campaign.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Should anyone with ancestors who fought at these battles want to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;post some of your own thoughts and information along with your an-&#x3C;BR&#x3E;estors name and rank, you are encouraged to do so at anytime.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;LISTS ADMINISTRATOR&#x3C;BR&#x3E;glenn&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

We returned to Johnson's Island in 2006 and 2007 to follow investigations of the prison hospital, where work continues in 2008.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;      &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Version 9.5 of the U.S. Civil War Units File (June 25, 2008) is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;now available.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) lists people who have information&#x3C;BR&#x3E;on a unit, ship, or group (often rosters, battles, etc.) and are&#x3C;BR&#x3E;willing to help others research it. Some are experts; most are&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x22;just&#x22; helpful fellow researchers. If you see a listing for a unit&#x3C;BR&#x3E;you are interested in, you can send the contact person email and share&#x3C;BR&#x3E;information. There are also listings for battles, organizations,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;counties, ethnic groups, etc.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include&#x3C;BR&#x3E;attached files. Thanks!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you have a listing in the file, please make sure it's still there,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and send me an update if needed.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The following addresses no longer work and we were unable to find the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;people, so their listings have been deleted. <link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/VAWBTSVETS/2008-06/1213838144</link>
<description>CONFEDERATES REPEL MANY MISMANAGED ASSAULTS JUNE RIGHTEENTH 1864&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;During the 18th of June in 1864 the Confederates with Beauregard&#x3C;BR&#x3E;were able to repel a number of badly coordinated attacks against&#x3C;BR&#x3E;their defensive line. Gradually they see southern reinforcements&#x3C;BR&#x3E;arriving to support their efforts.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;All of the federal assaults have been met with stiff resistance.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;At 2:00 in the afternoon they were making some progress, but the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;cost was extremely costly. In a 30 minute period one regiment is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;listed as having lost 632 of their 900 soldiers engaged.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;As the fighting around Petersburg comes to an end with darkness,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;General Grant studies the situation, and begins choosing another&#x3C;BR&#x3E;course of action. During the first days of action at Petersburg,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the federals have lost 1688 killed, 8513 wounded, and 1185 which&#x3C;BR&#x3E;had been captured and missing. The figures represent some 11,386&#x3C;BR&#x3E;soldiers out of 63,797 engaged.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Should anyone have an ancestor which served during this battle,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;you are invited to share their rank and their servie records.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Anyone with additional information is encouraged to post to this&#x3C;BR&#x3E;list too!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;VAWBTSVETS List Administrator:  glenn&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[VAWBTSVETS] Civil War Units File CWUNITS Call for Listings</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/VAWBTSVETS/2008-06/1213321850</link>
<description>Have you researched a U.S. Civil War unit or group?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Are you willing and able to help others research that unit?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The next version of the U.S. Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) will&#x3C;BR&#x3E;be available in late June. An announcement will be posted then.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In the meantime I invite listings through Monday, June 23.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Also welcome are reports of non-working addresses in other people's&#x3C;BR&#x3E;listings, updates to your own listings, etc.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include&#x3C;BR&#x3E;attached files. Thanks!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The purpose of the CWUNITS file is to let people list units, groups,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;battles, etc. that they have information on (from pension records,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;books, etc.) and are willing to help other people research.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Typically the contact person had an ancestor who was in the unit,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;but re-enactors, history buffs, et al. are welcome. (This is *NOT*&#x3C;BR&#x3E;a list of re-enactment units.) People who are interested in a unit&#x3C;BR&#x3E;can send the contact person email and share information.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you have questions please read the FAQ first. If it doesn't&#x3C;BR&#x3E;answer your questions, feel free to ask me.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The following addresses no longer work. If you are one of these&#x3C;BR&#x3E;people or know how to contact one, please email me. Unless we find&#x3C;BR&#x3E;new addresses we'll have to delete their listings.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;	parrotte@primary.net (Donald Parrott)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;	WMORGAN3@aol.com (Skip Morgan)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Anyone who'd like to volunteer to be a contact, please send me email&#x3C;BR&#x3E;from the address where you'd like to be listed. If you are&#x3C;BR&#x3E;volunteering for more than one unit, it's OK to put them all in the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;same message.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Please list your entries in this format (sample addresses are fake):&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Illinois (USA)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;4th Illinois Cavalry, Co. F 1861-4 Abe.Lincoln@uky.edu&#x3C;BR&#x3E; http://www.fakesample.com/4thil&#x3C;BR&#x3E;18th Reg. Ill.
