They moved to Vershire, VT, near Hugh’s son’s family – Joshua and Polly (SESSIONS) ALEXANDER – and Hugh died there in 1818. Joshua died in 1854, his wife died in 1857. After the enactment of Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Claims for veterans and their widows in 1855, Betsey (at age about 92) was living in West Fairlee and made application to receive bounty land. Questions – When did Betsey move to West Fairlee? With whom did she live? When did she die? And where is she buried? Who were her ALEXANDERs? Any clues or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Later he learned the trade of harness making, and for sevral years he was engaged in this line of business in Bethel. in 1870, he sold his harnes business and in company with Lucius B. Wright he purchased the saw and grist mill at the north end of the village, and for several years this business was conducted under the firm name of Wright & Cushing. They sold the mill to B. C. Bagley a few years later, and Mr. Cushing started in the tannery business at Bethel, selling the same to J. B. Alley & Co., in 1882. From that time Mr. Cushing was not engaged in mercantile persuits, but dealt quite extensively in real estate, buying and selling farms, and carrying on the same. A Democrat in politics, Mr. Cushing's public life was confied to the several town offices which he held in Bethel. He was married three times.
