[WHITMAN] Sarah Whitman, b. 15 Aug 1828 in Waterloo, Canada or Vermont

Searching for the parents of Sarah Whitman, born 15 Aug 1828 in Waterloo, Woolwich Co., Canada or Vermont.

She was the daughter of J. and Mary Whitman. She married Nicholas D. Wagner on 13 June 1847 in Woolwich, Canada.
Nicholas D. Wagner emigrated from Germany with his father, Caspar and mother, unknown when he was 10 years old in 1833 to Woolwich, Ontario, Canada. Nicholas became a citizen of Canada on 11 Jan 1848.

They and their first five children emigrated to Fillmore County, MN in 1857. Nicholas died 28 Sept 1896 and Sarah died 13 July 1897; they are buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Preston, MN.

The county death records Sarah's parents as only J. and Mary Whitman. Census and other information records her place of birth as Vermont or Waterloo, Canada but most of the time it lists Vermont. I have visited the Vermont birth/deaths/marriage card index in Montpelier twice and was unable to find a record of her birth or her parents marriage. I tried every variation of the spelling of the Whitman last name without success.

I have no idea what an English descendant named Whitman from VT would be doing in Waterloo, Canada any way. I've looked at the census for Whitmans in Waterloo without success (not many people of English ancestry). She married at the age of 18. Nicholas Wagner was a successful shoemaker of modest means but well enough to have ten children.

Sarah is my great great grandmother and I'm hoping someone can share information on whom Sarah Whitman's parents were and where they were from.

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely, Orin Reams
Sponsor of the REAM, REAMS and TRENHAM Family discussion lists on Rootsweb.

Surnames: Bradley, Burlingame, Crandell, Crawford, Dornburgh, Durbin, Gassaway, Haskins, Hurlbut, Koch, Martin, Mattingly, Myers, Ream/Reams, Rogers, Sheldon, Shepard, Simes, Spalding, Stillwell, Taft, Trenham, Wagner, Walkup, Warren (Mayflower Pilgrim), Whitman, and Woodard to name a few.

They came from MD, PA, NY, MA, RI, CT, and VA and headed west over the next 200 years, just to make it more interesting for later family researchers!

---------------------------------
Like movies?

I would like to extend a offer to construct a free webpage
for any Senior Citizen of WHITMAN descent who might like to share
their historic Erie Canal information on the Internet, but who may
not have the capabilities to do so.

My name is Cliff Williams, and you can see an example of what I mean
by visiting my historical website [ www.towpathers.com ]and checking
out the webpage I built for a Mr. Thomas Doganieri. He grew up in
Ft. Plain, NY and was delighted to share his wonderful old photos of
Lock-32 and finally get them on the Internet for other interested
visitors to see.

I hope that you will seriously consider allowing me the honor
to do the same for you. Your page will be of similar design, and
can contain a little or allot of information.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

Respectfully,
Cliff Williams - Rochester, NY

Mary Jo and Donald:

I will certainly keep your information of all your names handy while I
am doing my research just in case I come across something. The oldest
Whitman ancester that we have is Joseph B. Whitman, he came to the US at
an early age from England, we estimated that he was probably born Abt.
1790's. Not sure where he grew up or who his parents were, but he
settled in Oak Hill, NY with his wife, they later moved to Poughkeepsie,
NY, where he died in 1870.

Currently, all of our research is centered around the the Delaware,
Greene, Dutchess, and Kings counties of New York.

Good luck,
Mary Ann
----------------------------------------------------------------------

>Message: 1
>Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 12:58:55 +1100
>From: "Mary Jo C. Whitman, who went by the name of Chris as an adult, was the son of Moses Whitman and Evaline Brasier Whitman of Turman, Sullivan Co., Indiana. Moses and Evaline were both born in Indiana: Moses c1836 and Evaline c1844. They were married on April 18, 1861 in Indiana. Moses was a farmer and a Civil War veteran. Moses died on Feb. 4, 1898 in Turman. Evaline died on July 20, 1918 in Turman.
>
>Moses was the son of Henry and Mary/Marya Whitman of Turman, Sullivan Co., Indiana. Mary's maiden name is unknown. Henry and Mary were both born in Kentucky: Henry c1797 and Mary c1802. Henry was a farmer. Mary died sometime in the early 1860s, and Henry married Fanny Sherman on Nov. 17, 1865. In 1870 Henry and Fanny were living in Hamilton, Sullivan Co., Indiana. Henry died sometime in the 1870s.
>
>I am happy to do a bit more research on Ancestry.com for you if you have specific questions.
>
>Good luck!
>
>Mary Jo C. Thanks for including me in your
> messages.
>
> My grandfather, Christian C. Whitman, came to Missouri as a young man in the
> very early 1900's from Sullivan County Indiana. I understand that his
> father was named Moses Whitman, but that is the extent of my knowledge. There is
> a family story that Moses came there from Pennsylvania, but I don't know that
> as a fact.
>
> Christian C. married Frances Adeline Sprague in Dallas County, MO, and they
> produced three children--my father, Clarence R. Whitman, my uncle, Homer
> Emerson Whitman, and their sister, Ethel Whitman. All three are now deceased,
> but a number of us first-cousins are still alive.
>
> In the last few years, I have become somewhat involved in the Sprague
> ancestry, and have run across some interesting stories about the Whitman-Sprague
> family relationship possibilities. It appears that both families came to North
> America about the same time (1620-30) from the same area (Weymouth and
> Upwey, Dorsetshire, England), and settled in the same region around Charlestown
> and Boston in New England. Added to the interest is the Sprague family history
> which shows about eight records of Whitman-Sprague marriages in the time
> since then.
>
> I have a Whitman cousin, Dwain, who lives in Springfield, MO, who has a
> better Whitman record than me, and I will send a copy of this message to him.
> Perhaps he can add to the knowledge of our family history.
>
> Donald Whitman
>
>
>
>
>
>
>

**************Start the year off right.
Hello,
I plan to check with my FHC re: Greene County, NY microfilm to check for
Charles' birth record. Whitman, age 31, shoemaker, was in Walton, Delaware Co., New
York in 1850. Others in the household were Dolly, age 26; Alfred E., age 7;
Laurent D., age 4; and William S., age 1. All had been born in New York.
They were the only Whitmans in Walton.
>
> Not sure where Charles was married, we do know that his wife was named
Elizabeth and they had a son, Charles, b. 1877 in Prattsville, NY. His son
settled in Brooklyn, NY and married in 1903 to Grace Boggs. The name
remained the same throughout the years, we discovered a digital book,
"Bouton-Boughton Family" written in 1809 that shows several pages of
Whitmans.
>
> I'll look into subscribing to the county lists.
>
> Thank you very much,
> Mary Ann
>
>
> ----------------------------------------------------------------------
>
> Message: 1
> Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 19:42:57 -0500
> From: MaryAnn Lofgren <mari54@mindspring.com>
> Subject: [WHITMAN] Charles Whitman
> To: WHITMAN@rootsweb.com
> Message-ID: <47993091.6010704@mindspring.com>
> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed
>
> Hi All,
> I am new to this list and helping my husband search for his ancestors.
> We have Charles Whitman, b.1853 in Hancock, Delaware County, NY.
> His parents are Francis B. Whitman and Dolly Twedell of Hunter, NY. We
> believe that Charles is my husband's great great grandfather, can
> someone point me in the right direction in locating Charles' marriage
> information.
> Thank you,
> Mary Ann
>
> ------------------------------
>
> Message: 2
> Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2008 14:33:24 +1100
> From: "Mary Jo C. I'm not sure how many
other people are subscribed who can help you.
>
> My best advice is to join the Rootsweb mailing list for Delaware Co., New
York. I believe it would take an email to this address:
>
> NYDELAWA-L-request@rootsweb.com
>
> with the single word subscribe in the message subject and body.
>
> People on that list would be more familiar with the local marriage
regulations/documents in Delaware Co. and where to obtain them. Success, of
course, is contingent upon Charles being in Delaware Co. for his marriage.
Where did he end up?
>
> Are you subscribed to Ancestry.com? I had a little look on your behalf,
and I found:
>
> Francis B. Whitman, age 31, shoemaker, was in Walton, Delaware Co., New
York in 1850. Others in the household were Dolly, age 26; Alfred E., age 7;
Laurent D., age 4; and William S., age 1.
Hello Mary Jo and Michael, Thanks to both of you for your input.

This is the correct family, Charles was the youngest born to this family in 1853:
Francis B. Whitman, age 31, shoemaker, was in Walton, Delaware Co., New York in 1850. Others in the household were Dolly, age 26; Alfred E., age 7; Laurent D., age 4; and William S., age 1. All had been born in New York. They were the only Whitmans in Walton.

Not sure where Charles was married, we do know that his wife was named Elizabeth and they had a son, Charles, b. 1877 in Prattsville, NY. His son settled in Brooklyn, NY and married in 1903 to Grace Boggs. The name remained the same throughout the years, we discovered a digital book, "Bouton-Boughton Family" written in 1809 that shows several pages of Whitmans.

I'll look into subscribing to the county lists.

Thank you very much,
Mary Ann

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Message: 1
Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 19:42:57 -0500
From: MaryAnn Lofgren <mari54@mindspring.com>
Subject: [WHITMAN] Charles Whitman
To: WHITMAN@rootsweb.com
Message-ID: <47993091.6010704@mindspring.com>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Hi All,
I am new to this list and helping my husband search for his ancestors.
We have Charles Whitman, b.1853 in Hancock, Delaware County, NY.
His parents are Francis B. Whitman and Dolly Twedell of Hunter, NY. We
believe that Charles is my husband's great great grandfather, can
someone point me in the right direction in locating Charles' marriage
information.
Thank you,
Mary Ann

------------------------------

Message: 2
Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2008 14:33:24 +1100
From: "Mary Jo C. I'm not sure how many other people are subscribed who can help you.

My best advice is to join the Rootsweb mailing list for Delaware Co., New York. I believe it would take an email to this address:

NYDELAWA-L-request@rootsweb.com

with the single word subscribe in the message subject and body.

People on that list would be more familiar with the local marriage regulations/documents in Delaware Co. and where to obtain them. Success, of course, is contingent upon Charles being in Delaware Co. for his marriage. Where did he end up?

Are you subscribed to Ancestry.com? I had a little look on your behalf, and I found:

Francis B. Whitman, age 31, shoemaker, was in Walton, Delaware Co., New York in 1850.
