- Bela T. Hunt, one of the first settlers of St. Charles, built this home of local bricks from Penny's Brickyard (now Baker Park) in 1836. Hunt had been attracted to the new settlement, then known as Charleston, when he heard of a plan to build a new dam and mill on the river. Upon his arrival in the burgeoning settlement, Hunt purchased half interest in the town site, which included a sawmill and a general store. Hunt quickly became a successful businessman--he had an interest in or ran a mercantile store, paper mill, tannery, lumberyard, and grain business over his fifty-year residence in St. Charles. During the Civil War, he established the office of mayor, and was later elected Kane County Treasurer.
