- From: "EM Neil" <emn@London.com>Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2004 17:03:50 -0000To: INDIA-L@rootsweb.comSubject: Re: [India-L] Best spot in England for HEIC army records1810-1835?Hi PhyllisTHE place to visit is the British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB.(It is very close to Kings Cross and St Pancras Stations, which provide bothmainline and Underground rail services)The Asia, Pacific and African Collection Reading Room (formerly OIOC) at theBritish Library has all the India Office Records. This includes those of theHEIC. Check out http://www.bl.uk/collections/orientaloffice.html for moreinformation.Take along details of all the info you already have on Samuel, plus penciland paper, and go early in the day so that you have plenty of time to spare. You will need ID (your passport will do, but you also need proof of yourpermanent address) to apply for a reader's pass, a £1 coin for a locker tohold your coat and bag, some photocopying money, and your reading glasses. Ihave always found the staff most helpful.I cannot help with the museum question, but on a slightly different tack Ihave just seen that the National Archives (formerly Public Record Office) inKew will be staging an exhibition titled 'Our man in India' beginning laterthis month. This features photos taken by Cecil Beaton in India during 1944.More info at http://www.pro.gov.uk/events/events_exhibitions/india.htmGood huntingEleanor in London
