Grave of THOMAS Charles HOLMES
Go to Newton's Library and History Center...They can probably find more
directions and someone who may be able to take you.
My Nephew, Richard B. "Ricky" HOLMES lives in Burkeville and he took me .
If he is home I am sure he would love to show you. He works OFF-shore
drilling and is unavailable sometimes. His wife, Kim is a nurse at the
Hospital in Jasper.
My Xerox copy of the newspaper article says the Historical Marker was
erected June 27, 1967.
Quote " The cemetery is 1.1 miles off of Highway 63 near the site of the
Old Newton-Hemphill Road.
It is a scenic spot, but at present is unaccessable to travelers".......and
that was in 1967!
Well, maybe someone has cut the pine timber and you can find the gravesite
with no trouble..I hope.
I can send you information on Thomas Charles but believe the Historical
Library has the information as I submitted my family line and others have
also submitted.

There is no picture that I am aware of of Joseph W. HOLMES.
While in Newton you may contact Patricia Forest or other descendants as well
as viewing the Monument on the Courthouse Square. The HOLMES names are
scattered on the stones because I did not know about the project until after
several years had passed. Claiborne's in not there as I cannot contact his
family.

The gravesite is probably on land now owned by a Timber Company
But there is a right of way to the site ....maybe over-grown now ...washed
out when I was there. Had to walk as the car could go no farther.
I will try sending the attachment to your personal e-mail address tomorrow.

<> Irene: Thanks for the compliments. I don't think I received the e-mail with thedischarge paper attachment. Can you please resend it? My plan is to make apage for each member of Spaight's Battalion, so the brothers will have pagestoo. Anything you send me will be included on the pages unless you tell meotherwise. believe me when I say you can not send me too much information.I would also be very very interested in finding and reclaiming Thomas'grave.I know that I can get our reenactment unit to help with that if we can getthe land owner's permission.
