How did you come by such a rare letter? Was it from a library or private sources.
I ask because, if it was from a private source, it really should be preserved as a piece of the historical record. So much of our history is uncataloged and is gradually diasappearing with time. I learned a few years ago how quickly irreplacable documents and photos can be lost when I suffered a catastrophic house fire and am always urging people to share these treasures with archives, libraries, or museums. Many will gladly accept copies into their collection so it is not always necessary to give up a priceless family heirloom.
As one who is continually searching for every scrap of material relating to a particular regiment, I can assure you that preserving these historic materials can only benefit future historians and researchers.
Ok now that, I'm off my soapbox. ;-)
You might want to request the Compiled Service Records from the National Archives or check with local libraries to see where the closest source of the microfilmed records are available. (They are available throughout the country and it may be possible to look up the info yourself. If you do want to order the records you may want to order through the Hillsboro Confederate Research Center in Texas as they'll provide copies of the CSRs plus search their own records at a lower price than the National Archives will.)
The CSRs are comprised of cards for individuals containing information transcribed from a unit's original rolls and may contain other official documents related to an individual as well. They are a good place to start when tracking an individual's military career. These two sites may be of some help in locating these records
Godd luck in your search!
