Here's an alternative for ya'll -

For a specific other state or special project - http://www.usgenweb-search.us/

(not all states are available but soon will be)

I found it quite interesting as these just focus on web sites associated with
the various USGenWeb Project sites - which depending upon your query can be
more specific perhaps than Ancestry, Google or some other search engine.

I know for myself that my family tended to hop across county lines rather
than the lines redrawn around them as the census years rolled by. Perhaps
your missing family is sitting just over a county line - where you may have
not been looking.
