***** The Scots Origins site uses the same index entries as the OPR Index
and SCR cd-rom, and is as complete an index to Church of Scotland Registers
as we acan expect to see.
What you don't get are the registers of the Scottish Episcopal church and
other churches, but in the 1600s there was only the one national church,
apart from the Roman Catholics who were few and far between.
Your basic problem is probably that registers have been lost or destroyed,
and only if your family were landowners, were well off, or left a will
will there be any definitive record of parentage. The Aberdeenshire sasines
from the 1600s and the national annual indexes of registers of deeds may
identify persons, but only the better-off are likely to appear.
I forgot one possibility: the published Sheriff Court Records of Aberdeen -
they may have done something illegal!
