John Cruickshank married Anna Finnie about 1808. Four children: John,
James, Robert and Mary.
The two Johns were "stone dressers" and both died with smallpox before 1850.
We
know Robert was born in Peterhead in 1819 and this was likely where family
always lived.
James and wife (Rachel?) left Scotland about 1850 and migrated to London,
Ontario,
Canada. Anna (Finnie) Cruickshank migrated with her son's family.
Robert married Christina Dalgarno in Aberdeen County about 1853. Christina
was born 1832 and reared by an uncle (name not known). After the birth of
first child, this
couple also migrated to Canada. After twelve years in Canada, three
children died
with diphtheria or small pox and the wife was so discouraged they moved to
LaSalle County, Illinois in United States where old friends/neighbors from
Scotland lived.
The first daughter of Robert and Christine was named Catharine and the first
son was
Thomas. We have wondered if these were the names of Christina's parents or
uncle as they are not Cruickshank names.
I am trying to locate early Scots residents of LaSalle County and will post
what I learn.
(1) If anyone is researching Cruickshank or Dalgarno or Finnie in Aberdeen
I would like to hear from you.
(2) If anyone has family members who left Scotland and went to LaSalle
County, Illinois USA, I would appreciate knowing those names.
Thank you, Virginia
