Hello Jo.

You have probably heard from others already, but in case you have not,
here's what happens. The front page of Scots Origins has a lot of
information on how it works, as well as examples of what you might receive
if you send for certificates, etc. There is a link to access the database
on the front page. Once you do that, you will be asked to fill out a form,
including a credit card with which to pay. It is a highly secure site and
your information is only retained a short time. For about $10 you can
download 30 pages of information within a 24 hour period. You can make a
number of "free" searches without donwloading. The download part comes when
you decide you have found something of interest and want to look at the full
database entry. For example, you may want to find Farquhar Mensies (you
should be so lucky as to have an uncommon name like that!). You indicate
you are interested in birth, marriage, death, & census records for up to a
10 yr.. period. The next screen will tell you how many entries there are
for that name and how many pages are involved. Each page = 1 download. You
can order certificates or census pages at the same time, for about $16 each.

There are boxes to check on the access page, including which records you
want to search. If all you want is the 1891 census index, uncheck all the
other boxes. Enter your person's name, and you will be told how many
names/pages are involved. The ages of the people will be given, too, so you
can roughly judge if it might be your person. If you send for the census
page, it is the full page, so other residents of the household are included.

I wanted to save money, though, so I copied the information at the far right
of the download regarding the census e.d. & page number. Then I went to the
LDS, using their microfilm to order the appropriate census roll. That cost
me $3.50, plus I could cruise the rest of the roll in the off-chance that
some other family might be there-- no luck with that so far.

Good luck.

"Searching the Indexes" but can't find anything there. Thanks -- Jo
