Hello List: I have a maternal 3rd grt grandfather
born 1812 at Kirriemuir, Angus. However, his name
is James "Woodhead" ROSS, and until recently I
have been searching for any of his predecessors
with the surname "Woodhead", for whom he might
have been named. Now, it has been suggested that
perhaps the name was given to him because of a
connection to the town/village/city(?) of
Woodhead, Aberdeenshire.

I am now wondering if it is possible for an Angus
born man to have family that originated in the
Aberdeenshire area? Was it common for people to
move about frequently between districts in the
early part of the 19th century? I don't know what
his occupation was, but other members of the
family were farm servants and/or hand loom
weavers.

Another question - was there a prominent family
living at that time in Aberdeenshire with the name
of Woodhead?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank
you.
Pat
