Ruth,

ms = maiden surname.

Is the mother listed with another surname? If you have only one death cert,
with both GERRARD and SMITH down as "ms", I would assume the mother had been
married twice at least twice. Is there a father listed? If so, is his
surname the same as the deceased? When was your deceased person's birth?
Do you have the birth cert?

If his/her birth was well after 1855, it might be a good idea to send for
the parent's marriage cert (or the marriage cert with the surname the mother
was using at the time of the deceased death). You can check first using
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk a pay for view web site, if the dates are post
1855. The deceased's birth details will/should have the actual date of the
parent's marriage as well, which will/should make it very easy to go
straight to it. The marriage details will/should then tell you if there had
been a privous marriage(s) and will/should give you any prior surname(s)
from another marriage, plus ms. Well worth the effort to use the web site,
if these are important details needed for your research.

Good luck,
Toni ... Ontario Canada.
