From Glasgow to Stonehaven by the direct routes is about 150 miles, and
you should cover it comfortably inside 3 hours - but not if
you go via St Andrews! I don't know how long Glasgow to St Andrews
might take, but I suspect the answer is probably "longer than I think".
Nor do I know which route would be the best. I would probably take the
M8 to just short of Edinburgh, and then head for the Forth Road Bridge.
I would stay on the A90/M90 until junction 8, then take the A91. This
last is not a fast road, so I would not be surprised if the trip from
Glasgow took over 2 hours. There are various other (possibly more
scenic) routes you could take, but I would expect them to be slower.
When you leave St Andrews, make for Dundee (over the Tay Road Bridge)
This should take half an hour at most. You then have choice of routes:
you can re-join the A90, which runs inland via Forfar, and will get you
to Stonehaven in about an hour, or you can take the coast road, which is
scenic in places, but slower.
