Hi Bill

Thanks for your reply.

Yep - looking at the original is good!!

I like your idea of the Minister differentiating between Alexander &
Alexr. However we have a case of four James [Cheyne, I think] living in
one farm in Methlic and the Minister didn't bother to differentiate,
except in one case of witnesses to a baptism which helped us sort the
family out. Not a direct part of our tree, thank goodness.

Another point to consider is that William [27 May] and Jean [16 June]
may have been twins. Remember that the date in the OPR is a baptism
date, not a date of birth unless that is explicitly stated. Also there
is the possibility that William was a sickly child and had to be
baptised quickly, or alternatively Jean was sickly and they couldn't get
her to the kirk for another three weeks.

The reason it's vital to look at the original is that the witnesses
provide VERY valuable clues. If, for instance, one of the witnesses to
William was called Alexr OGG, [or Alexander a witness for Jean] then you
have proof that there were indeed two Alexanders [hooray!] and your
assumption is true.

From your notes, am I right in thinking that the change of name seems to
have happened about the end of May 1775 and that Alexr was used
thereafter? If so then a change of Minister or of scribe at that date
looks very possible.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from your credible assumption that there
were two Alexanders, only raising valid doubts which, unfortunately, may
never be resolved.

Good hunting and the very best of luck

Ray
