Hello there,
I'm new on the list, and hoping to find relations or
information for the following DEANS family of Glenmuick,
and/or for the Coilacriech Inn and/or Dalbagie Farm.
Francis Deans (b. abt 1808?) married Catherine Riddell (b.
11 Jul 1810) in 1836. Their banns were read in Glenmuick
(25 Sep) and St Nicholas (8 Oct). They had six children
that I am aware of, at least four of whom were born in the
Coilacriech Inn.
I'm not sure where Francis was born, but I presume it was
not in Glenmuick, so I'm not sure how he came to be the
innkeeper at the Coilacriech Inn. Francis Deans died
sometime between the 1851 and 1871 censuses, but I have not
been able to find his death. Catherine died 12 Feb 1891 in
the Inn.
The children were:
1) Margaret (21 Dec 1836 - 21 May 1913), spinster
2) Jane (9 Dec 1838 - 26 Apr 1926), who married Charles
Milne
3) Francis (17 Feb 1841 - 2 Feb 1915), who married Emma
Foord
4) James (8 Jun 1843 - 20 Dec 1916), who married Isabella
Tait
5) Catherine (3 Nov 1845 - 9 Jul 1931), who married William
Grant
6) William (21 Feb 1848 - aft 1881), unknown
I am descended from Catherine Deans and William Grant, so
know much about them and their descendants. Catherine and
William emigrated to New Zealand around 1874. Francis also
came to New Zealand, in 1862 on the "Aboukir", and I know
quite a bit about his family also - though any information
is of course welcome!
Margaret stayed at the Inn with her mother until she
(Catherine) died. At some point thereafter she appears to
have moved from the Inn, to live in Ballater. She died at
her sister's house in Torphins, Kincardine.
Jane married Charles Milne in 1878. She died in 1926, and I
believe Charles died in 1904. I know of two children for
this couple, Francis (1880-1881) and Charles Deans Milne.
Charles D. Milne was born 4 Sep 1881, and died sometime
after 1926 (he was the informant for his mother's death).
James married Isabella Tait in 1880. For some time, he
lived in Dalbagie Farm House, which is adjacent on census
records to Coilacriech Inn. He appears to have become the
innkeeper at the Inn after his mother's death, and remained
so until he died in 1916. His occupation between 1901 and
1916 is given as innkeeper and farmer, but I do not know
whether this still refers to Dalbagie Farm, or another.
James Deans and Isabella had five children that I know of:
1) James Tait (1881 - 10 Jun 1958), who married Isabella
Clark
2) Margaret Ann (1883 - 28 May 1911), who married Robert
James Reid
3) Catherine Jane (1884 - 1 Dec 1962), unknown
4) Emma Isabella (1886 - 22 Nov 1960), unknown
5) Bertha Alice (1898 - 12 Jul 1975), who married James
Chalmers
If anyone can help me with anything to do with these
families or places, please contact me!
Cheers!
Nick
