Hi Sue

While Fred is correct in all he says about the IGI and the
availability of the film, unless he has looked at the film
itself, you shouldn't expect too much detail in the Marriage
record. It is only in certain cases - usually for the nobility
or professional classes - that details of the parents of the
spouses is given.

In our experience, Marriage entries usually consist only of
the names of the parties, not even their home address.
The only other detail might be where one of the parties is
from another parish. So take care before you lash out the
cash for a Marriage film - there can be a very annoying and
frustrating paucity of detail, unlike the birth records.

Also remember that the "marriage" entry is often made when
the couple pledge for their marriage, which takes place later.
Some OPRs register the dates of the first pledging [= Banns],
others may record all pledges and the marriage, which can be
on the same day as a pledge. This is why there may be several
references to the same marriage, especially so when one party
is from another parish.

The pledge usually [?always?] required lodging a sum of money
with the Kirk - 2 Scottish pounds was common. This sum could
be forfeit if the Kirk Session found out that pre-nuptial fornication
had taken place. The Kirk Session records [paper versions of the
surviving minutes are held in Edinburg] have many cases of the
pledges being forfeited. The Kirk Elders were very hot on this
particular sin, especially if a birth was imminent and the evidence
hard to conceal!

Best wishes
