Ryan:
I have been researching the origins of Robert Abernethy of Virginia for more
than 10 years.
To the best of my knowledge and research:
1. He was never imprisoned in the Tower of London. I have
communicated with
the archivist of the Tower and the only Abernethys that were ever
imprisoned
there were two different men named Sir William de Abernethie.
2. George Abernethy de Barrie actually existed. This is well
documented . I
have found no information to confirm that he had a son named Robert.
George
was the descendant of Alexander Abernethy, Sixth Lord Saltoun.
George did
indeed live in Banff in or near Glen Barrie. The Abernethy Lord
Saltouns lived at
Rothiemay Castle in Banff. This was near Glen Barrie.
3. I have no information to prove that Robert served in the Scots
army at
Dundee or Worcester, although that seems likely. There is a
document of
public record entitled "A List of the Prisoners of War, who are
officers in
Commission in Custody of the Marshal-General" dated September 9,
1651, that
names the Scots officers captured at Worcester. This document
identifies
Lieutenant John Abernathy and Ensign George Abernethy.
4. Robert was first recorded in Charles County, Virginia in 1652 as
Robert
Ebernathell ("Early Virginia Immigrants" by George Cabell Greer).
He
appeared to be the indentured servant of Robert West.
Robert West apparently purchased the indentures of Robert Abernethy
and others to obtain 700 acres of land based on "head rights" for 14
persons.
There is a lot of very bad and unsupported information on the web sites
about
Robert Abernethy. I urge you to ignore it unless they can quote reasonable
sources.
If anyone has documented information that disagrees with what I have stated,
please let us know.
Ryan, I would love to correspond with you on an individual basis.
Herman Abernathy

11th generation descendant of Robert Abernethy of Virginia
