Subject: Jean PITRE's Wives?
Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 22:40:48 -0400

I'm hoping someone can help me unravel a mystery concerning the wives of
Jean PITRE (b 1625-36, d bef 1689).

The 1671 Acadian Census identifies:
"Jean PITRE, edge tool maker, 35, wife Marie MAYOLS (first wife, Marie
PESELET); Children: Claude 9 months and 2 daughters; cattle 1."

First of all, I assume that the entry had a typo and that "Marie MAYOLS"
should read "Marie BAYOLS", the daughter of Barbe Baiols and sister of Rose
Baiols.

Secondly, I assume that Jean Pitre's first wife Marie PESELET (daughter of
Isaac PESSELET & Marie Barbe BAJOLET) had died prior to 1671.

Or, is the note in brackets a clarification that means Marie MAYOLS is Marie
PESELET, one and the same?

My problem!

The 1678 Census for Port Royal identifies:
"Jean PITRE & Marie PESSELET" as husband and wife with children Claude 10,
Marc 5, Pierre 3, Jean 1, Marie 14 and Catherine 11.

So - 7 years later Marie Pesselet has risen from the dead and Marie MAYOLS
has disappeared!

To add another twist:

The 1686 Acadian Census for Port Royal identifies:

Jean PITRE, wife Marie PESELET and children Claude, Mare, Pierre, Jean,
Francois and two girls.

This seems to confirm Marie PESELET as the correct wife.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is correct?

Thanks!
