I have been reading all of the mail about the name Melanson. Since I have a
Melanson in my line, I thought I would throw in my two cents, for whatever its
worth. Well, here goes:
Source >"The Acadian Miracle" by Dudley J. LeBlanc
In 1621, Sir William Alexander-Scotchman, romantic poet, and friend of King
James 1 of England-was presented with a patent to all the land known as
Acadia.
Upon arrival of the Scotch in Acadia, la Tour placed himself at their service.
(around 1627)
Alexander returned to England with 46 Scotch colonists, arriving there
Feburary 11, 1635. A few remained and were absorbed by the Acadians, all that
were left from the original number of a little over one hundred. There names
were:
Paisley, Colleson, Melanson and Peter, later changed to "Pitre".
I also found in the "Census of 1671- Port Royal" these name are listed:
Charles Melancon 28; wife, Marie Dugast; children: four daughters: cattle 40,
sheep 6.
Pierre Melancon, tailor-refused to answer. (He had a wife and 7 children.)
Hope this helps!
