Martaize is a village. Loudon is a town a bit larger and to the north.
A department is a segment of the country, somewhat like a state in the
U.S. but smaller.
The 'Acadian Colonists' Origins' page includes maps of the area during
that time period.<http://www.acadian-cajun.com/colorig.htm>;

Razilly left France on the "LÂ’Esperance a Dieu" on July 4, 1632 with 2
transports and 300 people. There may have been 12-15 women in this
group; there is no list of the passengers. [Clark, p. 95]

Actually, we only have evidence that a few Acadians were from the
Martaize/LaChausee area. The origin of most of the Acadians is
unknown. Tons of people have Martaize/LaChausee as the point of origin
in their records, no doubt a lot of it is due to Massignon's work.
Genevieve Massignon's studies point to the Acadian linguistics as being
of western French origin. It's too limiting to narrow it to such a
small area. Given that the records in this area have been thoroughly
searched, Stephen White suggests that this might be evidence that they
did NOT originate in this area. If anyone reads old French and has the
time and money to search through the parish registers of all of western
France, good luck :)

To Carole Brow ...
Mon Dieu! The name is Hébert, of course, not Herbert :)
