Hi Don, I have an elusive SMITH haunting LA also. I do not know if she is
French/Acadian or not. All the information I have is that her name is Mary
Jane Smith b. 1832; d. 1911, buried in Washington, St. Landry Par., LA; m.
Lindsay Jackson Kerr, Sr. One of their sons, Albert Arthur Kerr m. Mary
Ellia St. Cyr, dau/o Alexis St. Cyr and Elizabeth Arnaud.
Mary Jane had two husbands prior to Lindsay--(1) John Cotton (They are listed
on the 1850 E. Baton Rouge Parish census when she was 18, right after their
marriage). They had two children:
i. John Thomas Cotton, b. 20 Feb. 1851, d. 27 Jan. 1884; m. Felicia
Dejean
a. Arthur Gustave Cotton
b. John Thomas Cotton, b. 20 Feb. 1873; d. 15 Sept. 1873
c. Mary Cotton, d. 2 Sept. 1881
ii. Mary Elizabeth Cotton, b. 15 Nov. 1852, d. 31 Aug. 1861
m. (2) 15 May 1856, Burress Mantlebert Collier, b. 13 Sept. 1833, d. 12 Mar
1857.
i. Emma Lee Collier, b. 12 May 1857, d. 4 Nov. 1873; m. 19 jun 1873,
Milton A. Winkler. Emma died in premature childbirth
In the same census with Mary Jane and John Cotton, there is another Smith
family. Head is Alexander Smith. there is room for a child between two
other children. I am going to the Will Clayton Genealogical Library in
Houston this week to try to find them on the 1840 census to see if Mary Jane
is listed at age 8.
I suppose it would be too much to ask that your Smiths and mine tie together.
