In the Explanatory Notes of Vol.1.a of the DOBR books p.I-6 it states:
Use of "8" to Indicate an Indian Expression
The character "8" is used several times to indicate a sound in the Indian
language that cannot be expressed in French characters. Brown and Dean and
Natalia Maree Belting in "Kaskaskia Under the French Regime" discuss this
use. Brown and Dean note that "8" was used as a phonetic symbol to indicate
a "w" sound of the Illinois language. Belting states that French priests
used "8" to indicate a sound in the Indian language, sometimes translated as
"ou."
