Cynthia and list:
Original rosters of the officers and men from Pointe Coupee and other places
in Louisiana -- many of whom are Acadians -- who served under Galvez are part
of the PAPELES PROCEDENTES DE CUBA (CUBAN PAPERS) in the Spanish Colonial
records. The list from Pte. Coupee is in Legajo 161 "Company of the Militia
of the Post of Pointe Coupee and its jurisdiction, 30 June 1777."

The CUBAN PAPERS have been microfilmed and SELECTED ROLLS OF THE MICROFILMS
are available at a number of repositories, including: LSU, Northwestern
State University, USL (Lafayette), Tulane, Historic New Orleans Collection,
Alexandria Historical and Genealogical Library, Library of Congress, U.
Florida at Gainesville, and other places as well.

You will have to check to see which collections have Legajo #161 and then see
if the repository will have someone look through the roll to find the list
and make a copy for you. You might try the Historic New Orleans Collection
for starters. Or, if you live near any of the repositories, you may want to
go in and do the search yourself. All records are in Spanish.

FYI, in 1991 Winston DeVille published LOUISIANA SOLDIERS IN THE AMERICAN
REVOLUTION, based on an unpublished compilation (in English) made years ago
by Charles Robert Churchill and used by genealogists for years to locate
records of military service by Louisianians under Galvez. DeVille's book is
available through Provincial Press, PO Box 19355, Birmingham, AL 35219.

DeVille's book gives original citations in the CUBAN PAPERS and also
transcribes rosters from:
Iberville, 1777 (6 March)
New Orleans, 1777
Attakapas, 1777
Opelousas, 1777
Pointe Coupee, 1777
Iberville, 1777 (13 July)
New Orleans, 1778
German Coast, 1778
St. Louis, 1780
St. Louis, 1780
La Fourche des Chetimachas, 1781
ADDENDA:
Attakapas, 1774
New Orleans 1774
Opelousas 1776
Opelousas, n.d.
Acadian Coast 1770
Acadian Coast, 1770

Most of the rosters seem to have appeared in Legajos 159 and 161. But to
verify, or to get additional information about what can be found on Acadians
serving under Galvez (and much more!) in the Cuban Papers, consult this
invaluable finding aid: Roscoe R. Hill. Descriptive Catalogue of the
Documents Relating to the History of the United States in the Papeles
Procedentes de Cuba Deposited in the Archivo General de Indias at Seville.
Washington, DC: Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1916. Any repository
that has the microfilm will also have Hill's catalogue.

Hope this helps.

<< Stanley and list,
would you know where I can obtain microfilm copy or some other original form
of the list of men who served in the 1777 Pointe Coupee Militia under
Galvez? The plaque that exists in the Pointe Coupee courthouse, as
submitted by the DAR, lists a name which I believe is that of one of my
ancestors but is grossly mispelled. The name on the list is ENDRE
BONAVAULIERE, which I believe is really ANDRE BONAVENTURE. There is an
Andre Bonaventure in Pointe Coupee who would have been in his 30's in 1777
but in all my research of 'B' names in Pointe Coupee I have never, ever seen
a name even remotely resembling Bonavauliere. I have transcribed the 1860
Pointe Coupee free census and, therefore, from experience, I know that it
can be easy to misread letters such as 'u' for 'n' or 'l' for 't', etc. I do
have some of Andre Bonaventure's descendants if that would be a help for you
in your project to match the men up with families.
