In discussing New France and Acadia settlements, we forget that the French
were in the West Indies 80-100 years before the settlements in Canada! There
was a lot of back and forth, especially from Fortress Louisbourg (Cape
Breton). It is possible that some of the sons/grandsons of the West Indies
settlers migrated to Canada.

After twenty five years research on this subject, I have come to the
conclusion that the answer to the Brossard question about parentage of Jean
Francois shall not come from or be found in Canada. The only official record
in France reveals Francois Brossard was born to Francois Brossard & Louise
Barbarin about 1654 and babtized about 1655 @ Fille , Sarthe, France . No
one can prove what his relationship was to other acadians like Leblanc and
Gaudet with the exception of dispensation afforded Charles Brossard when he
married Madeleine Leblanc . Perhaps Charles could have had a relationship to
Leblanc thru his mother, Catherine Richard. Stephan White calls him
Francois, all older writers called him Jean-Francois. Perhaps the older guys
had access to records that are no longer available, certainly there must
have been a reason for the old writers to name him Jean-Francois. There is
also another possible set of parents in France for Jean-Francois, however,
the possibilities are not as strong as Francois & Louise Barbarin. I am not
prepared to quote a source at this date, but later when I am confident no
other records are available in France, I will do so. I would advise , if you
take anything you have read so far, to the bank, DO NOT make a deposit. And
by the way , in Canada, Jean Francois was still Brossard, the name really
took a new speling in Louisiana. It is very clear to me, that the Montreal
Brossard's and Jean Francois were connected in the 1500's in France, all
around LaFleche.
