VERRET AND CABANOCEY
Nicolas Verret (married to Marie-Josephe Cantrelle, the daughter of Jacques
Cantrelle) in 1764 had a plantation near the present day border of St. John
the Baptist Parish and St. James Parish (also near present day Lutcher, LA).
This is just upriver of what became known as the German Coast
Jacques Cantrelle had a plantation called ³Cabahannocer² near present day
St. James Railroad Station in St. James Parish, LA.
Louis Judice (married to Jeanne Cantrelle, the daughter of Jacques
Cantrelle) had a plantation just upriver from that of Jacques Cantrelle.
CENSUS OF 1766
I have found 3 separate census listings for 1766:
VERRET¹S COMPANY
³Census and count of the Acadians taken on April 8 according to the survey
made on that day of the inhabitants of the Kabakan Coast on both sides of
the river twenty leagues from the city.²
This lists the names of the head of households and the numbers of Women,
Teenage Boys, Men, Boys, Girls, and Slaves in each household, starting with
Verret, father (Nicolas Verret) and going up river.
This has been transcribed by Voorhies in ³Some 18th Century Louisianians
1750-1796² pp.114-115.
Lillian Bourgeois transcribed just the names of the heads of household in
³Cabanocey² p. 161.
JUDICE¹S COMPANY
³Census of the Militiamen and of the inhabitants on both sides of the
Mississippi at Cabaanoce, Acadian Settlement²
This also lists the names of the head of households and the numbers of
Women, Teenage Boys, Men, Boys, Girls, and Slaves in each household,
starting with Santiago Canterelle (Jacques Cantrelle) and going up river .
This has been transcribed by Voorhies in ³Some 18th Century Louisianians
1750-1796² pp.116-119.
CENSUS OF CABAANOCE
³List of the inhabitants settled on the left bank of the river from the home
of Jacques Cantrelle to La Fourche de Chetimachas, taken at Cabaanoce by

Railway Station, St. James Parish to Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish).
³List of the inhabitants on the right bank of the river from the home of
Joseph Hebert to the village of the Alibamont Indians²
This census lists the names and ages of all the family members plus the
Slaves, Land, Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, and Arms owned by each family. The heads
of household are nearly the same as those listed in JUDICE¹S COMPANY.
This census has been transcribed by Voorhies in ³Some 18th Century
Louisianians 1750-1796² pp. 201-213.
Lillian Bourgeois transcribed just the names of the inhabitants and their
ages in ³Cabanocey² p. 162-169.
I have found no census detailing the names and ages of VERRET¹S COMPANY
like that of JUDICE¹S COMPANY.
1769 CENSUS
CENSUS OF ACADIAN COAST-1769

that of Joseph Hebert to the environs of ____ l¹isle aux mases.²
This census covers the same area as JUDICE¹S COMPANY, but extends farther
into Ascension Parish with new settlers.
This census has been transcribed by Voorhies in ³Some 18th Century
Louisianians 1750-1796² pp. ?-?.
Lillian Bourgeois transcribed just the names of the inhabitants and their
ages in ³Cabanocey² p. 173-178.
I have found no census for 1769 covering the area of VERRET¹S COMPANY of
1766.
