Subject: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] Joseph Brossard Money Receipts April 1765
(continued)
Further to my earlier posting on the money receipts received by Joseph
Broussard¹s group, the following sources are what I have used to determine
the composition of the families, how they came to Louisiana, and their
histories in Louisiana from February 1765 until the census of 1769.
PRIMARY SOURCES
RECEIPTS: ³Recapitulation des recus fournis par le M. Maxent aux accadiens
...²
Original: French National Archives, Archives des Colonies, Series 13a:
(Louisiana General Correspondence) v. 45, p. 29.
Microfilm: The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, LA. The microfilm copy is very good and clear.
1766 ATT : ³Padrón y Lista de los Milicianos y Habitantes Acadianos ... en
25 de Abril 1766²
Original: Spanish National Archives, Archivo General de Indias, Audencia
de Santo Domingo, Legajos 2595.
Microfilm: The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, LA. There are actually two copies of the census with slight
differences. Both are reasonably good and what can¹t be deciphered on one,
usually can be on the other. Does not list names of wives or children.
Transcribed by Jacqueline Voorhies ³Some Eighteenth Century Louisianians²
pp. 124-125 with some errors.
1769 ATT: ³Resencement General des habitants des Atakapas (1769)²
Original: Spanish National Archives, Archivo General de Indias, Papeles
Procedentes de Cuba, Legajos 210, p. 228 et seq.
Microfilm: The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, LA. Reasonably good copy on microfilm. Lists names and ages of
children, but not of wives.
1766 CAB: ³Padron de las Milicias y Habitantes en el Rio
Mississippi..Cabaanocé...9 de Abril 1766²
Original:Spanish National Archives, Archivo General de Indias, Audencia
de Santo Domingo, Legajos 2595.
Microfilm: The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, LA. Poor copy on microfilm. Lists names and ages of wives and
children. Transcribed by Jacqueline Voorhies ³Some Eighteenth Century
Louisianians² pp. 201-213 and by Lillian Bourgeois ³Cabanocey² pp. 162-170.
Good agreement between the two transcriptions.
CAB MARRIAGES: ³Liste de accadiens mariés depuis L¹Establissment de
Kabahannossé²
Original: Spanish National Archives, Archivo General de Indias, Papeles
Procedentes de Cuba, Legajos 187A.
Microfilm: The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, LA. Some bleed through but still very useable. Found near end of
Legajos 187A Reel 1. Transcribed by Lillian Bourgeois ³Cabanocey²
pp. 171-172.
1769 CAB: ³Etat des habitants acadiends ...etablis sur les deux Rives du
fleuve... (14 September 1769)²
Original: Spanish National Archives, Archivo General de Indias, Papeles
Procedentes de Cuba, Legajos 187A.
Microfilm: The Center for Louisiana Studies, University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, LA. Very poor in part. Found on Legajos 187A Reel 2. Transcribed
by Lillian Bourgeois ³Cabanocey² pp. 173-179.
SECONDARY SOURCES
WHITE: Stephen A. White ³Dictionnaire Généalogique des Familles Acadiennes²
Base for families in Acadia.
JEHN: Janet Jehn ³List of French Acadians Living as Prisoners at Halifax (12
August) 1763² pp. 241-260 in Acadian Exiles in the Colonies. Janet has
facsimiles of the originals which appear to be very good.
CONSENTINO: Lucie Consentino ³List of Acadian Prisoners at Fort Edward, Nova
Scotia 1761-1762²
http://www.acadian-home.org (Acadia-Prisoners-At the Forts-Ft. Edward².
Lucie states ³This list is among the Manuscripts of Justice Deschamps
1750-1800 and may be accessed at the public archives of Nova Scotia at
Halifax - Family Papers Deschamps, Isaac - Vol. 32.²
HEBERT: Rev. Donald J. Hebert Southwest Louisiana Records Volume 1-A (1750-
1800)
The church records for Attakapas are missing from January 1766 to April
1771.
DOBR: Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records , vol 1 ³Pointe Coupee
1727-1769² pp. 138-224.
ADNO: Archdiocese of New Orleans Sacramental Records Volume 2, 1751-1771.
With the background of the sources I will be citing out of the way, I would
like to try to get the first three names on the list detailed tonight.
1) Alexandre Brossard
2) Anselme Brossard
3) Jean Bpte. Broussard
1) ALEXANDRE BROSSARD
Alexandre (dit Beausoliel) Brossard, son of Jean-Francois Brossard &
Catherine Richard, was born ca 1699 and married 7 Feb 1724 Marguerite
Thibodeau, daughter of Michel Thibodeau & Agnés Dugas (White p. 285).
12 Aug 1763 Halifax prisoners (Jehn p. 249)
Alexandre Brousare, his wife, four children
By my research, these are indicated to be:
Alexandre Broussard age 64
Marguerite Thibodeau age 57
Silvain age 22
Anne-Henriette age 16
Simon age 17
Pierre age 13
ALEXANDRE and his family left in November 1764 with brother Joseph Brossard
and arrived in New Orleans, LA about 24 February 1765. In New Orleans on 4
April 1765, he signed the D¹Auterive Compact. On 5 April 1765, he received a
receipt for 1360 livres in billetes (Receipts). Left for Attakapas in mid
April, arriving there in late April. Alexandre died there and was buried on
18 Sep 1765 (SM Ch,: v. 1, p.12; SM Ch.: Slave Funeral Register v. 1,
#21-Hebert p. 119).
MARGUERITE Thibodeau died at Attakapas 4 Sep 1765 and was buried 5 Sep 1765
(SM Ch.: v. 1, p. 12; SM Ch: Slave Funeral Register v. 1, #20-Hebert pp.
752-753).
In the 1766 Attakapas census is found:
Silvestre Broussard, 1 militia man, 1 teenage girl, 1 boy, 1 girl
By my research, these are indicated to be:
SILVAIN Broussard age 25 militia man
Anne-Henriette, age 19, sister of Silvain, teenage girl
Joseph age 11, orphan of Josephe-Gregoire, brother of Silvain, boy
Isabelle, age 15, orphan of Josephe-Gregoire, brother of Silvain, girl
About 1768, Silvain married Félicité Guilbeau, daughter of Joseph Guilbeau &
Madeleine Michel.
In the 1769 Attakapas census is found:
Silvain Broussard, age 27
His wife (Félicité Guilbeau age 21)
Joseph Broussard, age 14 (orphan of Josephe-Gregoire, brother of Silvain)
ANNE-HENRIETTE Broussard married ca 1768 Jean-Baptiste Berard of Dauphine
Province, France.
In the 1769 Attakapas census is found:
Jean Berard age 29
His wife (Anne-Henriette Broussard age 22)
Cristine Berard new born
In the 1766 Attakapas census is found:
SIMON Broussard (a bachelor age 20) militia man
Simon married 11 Apr 1768 Marguerite Blanchard, daughter of Rene Blanchard &
Anne Terriot (Cab Marriages).
In the 1769 Attakapas census is found:
Simon Broussard age 25
His wife (Marguerite Blanchard age 19)
Child newborn (name unkown, died before 1771 census)
In the 1766 Attakapas census, PIERRE Broussard probably was with Jean
Trahan. In that census is found:
Jean Trahan, 2 militia men, 1 teen age boy, 2 teen age girls, 1 girl
By my research, these are indicated to be:
Jean Trahan age 47 (he was a widower) militia man
Pierre Broussard age 16, militia man
Germain Trahan age 14, teen age boy
Madeleine Trahan age 17 teenage girl
Marguerite Trahan age 13 teenage girl
Anne Trahan age 8, girl
Jean Trahan was the widower of Marguerite Broussard, sister of Pierre
Broussard.
In the 1769 Attakapas census is found:
Pierre Broussard age 19, a bachelor.
2) ANSELME BROSSARD
Anselme Broussard, son of Alexandre Broussard and Marguerite Thibodeau, was
born 2 May 1734 (Reider Church Records, v. 2, p. 40). He married ca 1760
Madeleine Dugas, possibly daughter of Charles Dugas & Anne Robichaud??.
In the list of prisoners at Fort Edward on 12 Jul 1782 (Consentino) is
found:
Anselme Broussard-1 (family member).
On this date, all the men were in Halifax where the British were attempting
to deport them to Boston so the family member probably was his wife,
Madeleine Dugas.
12 Aug 1763 Halifax prisoners (Jehn p. 249)
Enselme Brousare, his wife, three children
By my research, these are indicated to be:
Anselme Broussard age 29
Madeleine Dugas age 21
Theodore new born
Child?
Child?
I have no information on the identification of 2 other children, possibly
orphans?
Anselme and his family came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard. On 5 April
1765, Anselme received a receipt for 360 livres in ordonnances and 661
livres in billetes (Receipts). Anselme does not appear in the 25 April 1766
census so must have died before then.
MADELEINE Dugas died and was buried 6 Oct 1765 (SM Ch.: Slave Funeral
Register v. 1 #23; SM Ch.: v. 1, p. 13-Hebert p. 276).
In the 1766 Attakapas census is found:
Theodoro Broussard
Theodore is listed alone, along with other orphans, even though he was only
3 years old.
In the 1769 Attakapas census, Theodore is with his uncle Jean-Baptiste
Broussard along with other orphans. In that census is found:
Jean B. Broussard age 37
His wife (Anne-Denis Brun age 35)
Jean, his son age 5
Michel, his son new born
Joseph Hebert (orphan) age 20
Mathurin Broussard (orphan) age 16
Theodore Broussard (orphan) age 6
Madeleine Thibodeau (orphan) age 18
3) JEAN-BAPTISTE BROUSSARD
JEAN-BAPTISTE Broussard born ca 1732, the son of Alexandre Broussard and
Marguerite Thibodeau married about 1763 in Halifax to Anne-Denis Brun,
possibly the daughter of Charles Brun & Anne Caissie?.
2 Aug 1763 Halifax prisoners (Jehn p. 249)
Jean-Batiste Brousare, his wife, two children
By my research, these are indicated to be:
Jean-Baptiste Broussard age 31
Anne-Denise Brun age 29
Joseph-Pepin Hebert age 14 (orphan of Benoni Hebert & Jean Savoie)
Pierre Hebert age ? (orphan of Benoni Hebert & Jean Savoie)
Jean-Baptiste and his family came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard. On 4
April 1765, he signed the D¹Auterive Compact. On 5 April 1765, Jean-Baptiste
received a receipt for 570 livres 8 sols in billetes (Receipts).
In the 1766 Attakapas census is found:
Juan Baptista Broussard, 1 militia man, 1 woman, 1 boy
By my research, these are indicated to be:
Jean-Baptiste Broussard age 34 militia man
Anne-Denise Brun age 32 woman
Jean Broussard age 2 boy (born after imprisonment in Halifax)
In the 1766 Attakapas census next door to Jean-Baptiste and his wife is
found:
JOSEPH Pepin Hebert age 17 militia man
PIERRE Hebert came to Louisiana with Jean-Baptiste, but died 24 Jul 1765, an
orphan of deceased parents, and was buried 25 Jul 1765 (SM Ch.: Slave
Funeral Register v. 1 #7; SM Ch.:v. 1, p.7 - Hebert p. 417).
In the 1769 Attakapas census is found:
Jean B. Broussard age 37
His wife (Anne-Denis Brun age 35)
Jean, his son age 5
Michel, his son new born
Joseph Hebert age 20 (orphan of Benoni Hebert & Jean Savoie)
Mathurin Broussard age 16 (orphan of Joseph-Gregoire Broussard & Ursule
Trahan)
Theodore Broussard age 6 (orphan of Anselme Broussard & Marguerite Dugas)
Madeleine Thibodeau age 18 (orphan of Charles Thibodeau & Brigitte Breau)
It seems Jean-Baptiste collected orphans.
I would very much appreciate any corrections, additions or comments on the
above information.
I will profile other families on the list of receipts in future postings.

The listing of the receipts given in April 1765 for Canadian money by Maxent
to the Acadians who came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard is found in the
French Archives in Paris.
Archives des Colonies, Series 13a: (Louisiana General Correspondence) v. 45,
p. 29
³Register of the receipts provided by Mr. Maxent to the Acadians hereafter
with the amounts of orders (Canadian Card money) and banknotes (Canadian
Paper Money) which they deposited with him to be sent by him to Mr. Maletie
at Bourdeaux and also the total sum tallies of the aforementioned
currencies².
There are 3 columns with the headings:
aux Nomme = name of receipt recipient
ordonnance = order = Canadian card money
billet = bank note = Canadian paper money
I am not going to list the currency amounts, but I would like to list the
recipient names. This list was prepared by a Frenchman and all members of
this group had been in Acadia or imprisoned in Nova Scotia for all the time
1755-1765. Therefore the name spellings should be close to the final
spellings in Acadia before Spanish and other influences began modifying
spellings. Note also the family grouping of names.
Alexandre Brossard
Anselme Brossard
Jean Bpte. Brossard
Michel Trahan
Silvain Braud
Brigitte Braud
Michel Bernard
Pierre Lagrése
Charles Babineau
Michel Poirier
Jean Boudro
Joseph Guidry
Abraham Roy
Joseph Bourgeois
Simon Le Blanc
Olivier Thibaudeau
Louise Thibaudeau
Paul Thibaudeau
Pierre Suret
Jean Semére
Augustin Bergeron
Jean Bpte. Bergeron
Joseph Arceneau
Jean Arceneau
Pierre Arceneau
Joseph Guillebeau
Jean Bpte. Cormier
Michel Doucet
Ambrois Martin
Victor Commeau
Gregoir Pellerin
Claude Martin
This is a list of only 32 households, not 58. A key missing person is Joseph
Brossard himself. It seems 16 families had no Canadian money to tender.
In future posts, I plan to list what I have come up with for each of these
families for the period 1755-1769, getting them through the Grand
Derangement, to Louisiana, and into the second Spanish census in Louisiana.
I would appreciate any additions or corrections of which you may be aware.
