Subject: [ACADIAN-CAJUN] 1850 federal census for St. Landry Louisiana
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 2004 00:15:13 EST

Hi all,
sorry I wasn't clear at all on my last message. I've noticed on the
Ancestry.com site that the 1850 census is not set up as it is on the actual microfilm.
I was curious if it was the same for the other sites. Ancestry, I've found,
only gives the slave schedule. My problem is, I have some free ancestors that I
can't seem to find on the 1850 census yet. I have discovered that next to some
names is the term "overseer" and then a list of first names only. The slave
schedules don't give names, however, this does. Are these the names of free
blacks that are being overseen? I needed to know if perhaps this overseer is in
charge of the "free" blacks. I was curious if anyone has any access or knows
how to access this on other sites that will list "overseer". If someone knows
please let me know.
Thank you,
