"The people most responsible for the success of the early
Acadian settlements were the Mi'kmaq. They gave their support and help
to the French, and they didn't launch attacks against the Acadians that
the Iroquois did against the settlers of New France.
Credit goes to Mi'kmaq chief Membertou for setting the tone
of cooperation and friendship right from the start. Membertou was a real
character, though we should probably speak of him in the plural. He
claimed he was over 100 years old and had been on hand to greet Cartier
when he explored the Maritimes more than seventy years before. But it is
much more likely that the name Membertou, being highly honoured was
handed down from one generation of chiefs to the next, a practice found

Acadian. There is so much data on the web that is pure "histoire de ma
grand'mère" (my grandmother's stories). I've always sought verification of
all data that pertains to genealogy, as on my website
