Gordon,
I did research on a Ayo(t) family for a student worker
of mine at L.S.U. (he was a 3rd cousin, once removed
through his father's mother's Boudreau(x) line and my
mother's mother's).
I see that you do go back to Marthurin Ayo & Cecile
Boudreaux. There's a wonderful story here. Marthurin
Ayeau (as it was spelled on the registration list of the
crew & passengers) was a crew member of the L'Amite'
which left either Nantes (pronounced Nant) or Pambeouf,
France August 12, 1785 and arrived in New Orleans on
November 7, 1785. Mathurin and Cecile, daughter of my
ancestors, Etienne Boudreaux & Marguerite Thibodeaux,
had fallen in love on the voyage and, in fact married a
month after arriving, on December 7 at St. Louis Church
(now St. Louis Cathedral). The new arrivals were kept
in N.O. for at least a month to stabilize after the long
voyage and to be sure that they had no diseases before
being sent to their new land.
They were given a Spanish Land Grant next to her parent's,
whose was located the first one on the east side of Bayou
Lafourche in what is now Lafourche Parish. In fact, there
is a large house (unoccupied) still standing near La.
Highway 308 that dates back to pre-1830 (owned by a
Thibodaux lawyer, Jack Wise).
By the way, the Ayo(t) spelling is probably because of the
Spanish influence (priests, etc.) in the area.
Good luck on your Ayo project. There are very many Ayo(t)
descendants, including the president of Nichols State University
in Thibodaux.
