Of course you're correct Stanley; however Paul, in his original post, was
referring to the 1686 census. In those days not everyone could read and write,
and often the enumerator would write the word as it sounded. For this reason, I
think that "Neigre" was a badly spelled "Nègre".

"Le Neigre" isn't the correct french spelling for a black male - it
would be "Le Négre"
Neige is snow - I don't know the meaning of Neigre.

I'm in Philadelphia just now...I think everybody believes that "African
decent" means black skinned. There were very many white skinned
Africans as there are still today. Africa is a country not a condition
<smile>...
