Subject: Acadians settled above German Coast between May-August 1765
Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 18:30:47 -0600
In letters dated May 13, 1765 and May 14, 1765 Foucault and Aubry
informed their superior of the arrival of 80 persons [prior to May 4,
1765] and 48 families [May 13, 1765] and stated that 1000 more were
expected. These families also had card money.
In a joint letter dated September 30, 1765, Aubry and Foucault wrote:
"...The Acadian families who have arrived in this colony since our joint
letter of April 30, like the families who have preceded them here, have
in their possession card money...
All these families are ahrd at work getting settled. Some families are
in Attakapas and Opelousas and others are on the right bank [of the
Mississippi River] above the Des Allemands district..."
This report seems to imply that no Acadians were settled above the
German Coast until between May, 1765 and August 1765. This would be
consistent with the appointments of the Commandants Judice and Verret.
