Hi all,

I just came across a reference which is probably to an ancestor of
mine. He wasn't Acadian but I'll use my usual excuse, that his children
married into Louisiana Cajun lines, and hopefully no one will mind too
much...

Anselm Ferguson (m. Ann Berry) had two confirmed children, Margaret (m.
David Kennedy) and Ann Elizabeth (m. Benjamin Hilaire Boudreaux, my
line). He is said to be "of Virginia." So far, despite over 20 years
of searching Louisiana and Virginia records, I haven't found a single
mention of him anywhere. Until...

In "Anglo-Americans in the Spanish Archives" by Lawrence H. Feldman, I
find a mention of "Anselmo Ferguson of the United States" in St.
Augustine, Florida. He was on the oaths of allegience in 1797 and 1811,
and on a "list of contributors" in 1799. This is the right time period
to be my ancestor, as his children were born in the 1780s. There was no
proof in the book that this is the same Anselm who m. Ann Berry, but I
can't imagine that it isn't.

Does anyone know if there are colonial records from Florida accessible
anywhere? Especially vital records?

Thanks... hope some other descendant of Anselm on the list finds this
helpful!

cheers,

Gordon
