Dear Linda & All,
My comments are not intended as a political discussion--more like pondering
what has happened and how it could occur.
So, not trying to cause dissension/dissent--am expressing being just plain MIFFED and CHEESED OFF at whatever failed (levees and action plans) as we discuss what has occurred.
I am not ashamed to be angry that people and other creatures are suffering and dying needlessly in New Orleans, while politicians pat one another on the back and smile for cameras. I am angry, and I am still praying. I fear most that if we don't get angry about this, it will happen again.
Seeing this happen to New Orleans is like seeing the compass star disappear, leaving an enormous vacuum, darkness, and colossal questions/worries about its future, the loss of its spirit and history, and what will become of its people who are scattered now. Our dead, our ancestors, connect us to the living, there, as does our humanity.
So, hope that clarifies where my center of gravity is in making remarks I have made...
I think we are all trying to find ways to respond and trying to figure out to whom we should respond.
In addition to Red Cross, etc., helping people, there are organizations trying to HELP ANIMALS,
like IFAW.(http://www.ifaw.org) and
the Fund for Animals (http://www.fundforanimals.org/Home/) .
Houston's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA)(http://www.spcahouston.org/spcahouston/) is doing hands-on animal rescue in New Orleans with
the Humane Society of the United States (http://www.hsus.org/). All Humane Societies need material donations, such as old newspapers, blankets, pet crates, bowls, leashes, etc.,....in addition to financial contributions.
Sure hope things get better each day now.

Hi Heidi and all,
I must say that Katrina could have easily and I mean easily moved over just
a small amount and she would have hit us here in Texas. That being
said........we here understand that, there but for the grace of God go I. Yes, we are
prepared as we too get many storms through here and are surrounded by the Gulf
of Mexico. It's right down the freeway from Houston. If it happened here I
am afraid it would be just as bad if not worse because we are more populated.
I am so drained from watching the desperation and agony on the news. I feel
worn out and very sad.
I am going to the Astro Dome to volunteer. I feel it's the least I can do.
Believe me I would have liked to get in my car and drive to Louisiana and help
but that is out of the question and we can't even get in there. So I will
drive 10 miles to the Astro Dome and help those there and help all that are
coming into Texas. All will be registered, given triage and then sent to other
locations.
As for now there seems to be a lot of anger, name and blame calling due to
frustration. Tempers are flaring and rightfully so. This has brought out the
worst and it will bring out the best in people. I think now is the time for
compassion and empathy. We all need to join together and just help and pray.
After all is said and done ....then lets hold people accountable.
For now I ask that we all stick together for the sake of these poor,
displaced, broken families.
Houston has always been a very giving place with kind and friendly people.
We as a town are the first to rally together for the good of all. Also remember
that Houston is filled with Acadian-Cajuns. We are proud of our Southern
Hospitality and will continue to offer it.
Lets not get into the political aspects of this. That will only bring
descention among us.
Please consider donating to the Red Cross as they are being stretched thin
right now. Even $10.00 means a lot.
Maybe we should start building a list of our members here, on the list, that
have lost everything. I know one that is Paul LeBlanc. Maybe we could start
trying to help those we know of, that are members. We probably won't know who
has been affected for awhile since they are scattered and have no way to
e-mail. But I am sure eventually we will here from them.
Sincerely,
Linda Louviere d'Amours
